  • Studebaker Motor Company (2004-???)

Does anybody know what the Studebaker Motor Company is all about?

They list a dealer "Holbrook Studebaker" which has no website, and say they have a new powerplant/chassis system called "Mobotic."

5 vehicles are listed - Phoenix a 5 passenger sedan; Hawk a 2 seat sports car; Mintaka a 5-7 seat minivan; Avonaco a Sport Utility Truck/Wagon; and Wolf a pickup truck.

The initial and history pages imply some connection with The Studebaker Corporation of South Bend Indiana 1852-1966 RIP (at least for cars), but I thought the remnants of the corporation basically reside with Federal-Mogul, having been bought by Wagner Electric, merged to create Studebaker-Worthington, then purchased by Gulf and Western Industries, later sold to Cooper Industries then to Federal-Mogul. The only operating division Studebaker-Worthington Leasing is now owned by the State Bank of Long Island.

It also intrigues me that you would start manufacturing 5 different vehicles, sounds risky to me.

    Thoughts anyone

I noticed this "company" pop up a few years ago .. I dont know what
they are doing, or if its real or scam. There is a similar "company"
that showed up on the Impala SS site. They were claiming to have
bought the tooling for the 1995 Caprice 9C1 (police car) and were to
start producing JUST that model again for police issue. If that were
true, many police agencies would be quite happy, since the 95 Caprice
9C1 is considered to be one of the best made. It seems to have turned
out to be a scam, someone looking for investors to get money from. I
cant see GM selling the tooling for ANY of their cars, Studebaker had
with the Avanti, Wagon, and trucks .. but thats after closing auto
    production all together.

One would assume its either a "dreamer" or a scam, look how much the
Avanti Motor Corp has suffered to stay in business, closing yet again,
and the Government in Ohio taking over their old buildings ....[B)]

You're probably right Tom, it must be a scam, imagine the cost of starting to produce cars, let alone 5 different models.

As for Avanti I didn't know about Ohio, thought they were in Georgia, in any case maybe their production isn't large enough to make it a viable proposition, not to forget the cost of the 2 "Studebaker" vehicles they have - that must have cost heaps for the tooling alone.

Being born and raised in Youngston Ohio now living in Houston. I have had family that worked assembling the Avainti. It stopped operations at least 8 years ago. I remember the owner going bankrupted. My very bad memory tells me he sold the name to someone in Texas and an anouncement was made they were going to begin producing cars again. But that was years ago.

Not from Australia (smile) was just curious as it sounded interesting, whether cars are produced remains to be seen.

I have had a number of conversations with Mr. Raines regarding his plans to produce cars and trucks. In our latest conversation some months ago, he said he would have a prototype car at Omaha. I'd told him that until we can see and touch an actual car, his company would continue to be suspect. He then said that I'd be able to come to their 200K s.f. plant in Texas and review the car and company for an article sometime in July. Needless to say, it will be interesting to see what happens as July approaches. I think we can all agree that we're all from Missouri on this one: show me.

I agree. Even Avanti Motors is suspect in my opinion. They seem to update their website about once a year at best, are never mentioned by car magazines that they ought to be mentioned in, promise models (e.g. the Studebaker SUV) and then never seem to keep anyone updated about the direction of the project, and so on and so on.

Even if Mr. Raines is sincere, I think most of us are very wary about getting any hopes up whatsoever. His approach to getting the word out does more harm than good, in my opinion. It has too many rough edges about it and too many informational gaps. His website has the same kind of evasiveness about it that the Avanti Motors site has. It does not engender confidence.
