I purchased a truck with a retrofit rearend installed, which I won't be using. I was told in was a Hawk posi traction. There is no tag, however in addition to the number 44, there are a couple of US PAT numbers. They are (as far as I can tell), US PAT 1968618, and US PAT 2D18185. The tires spin in the same direction when turned, and driveshaft rotation is a little over 3 1/4 turns, at one full revolution of tire. First two pictures on my link are of rear in question. Is this a Hawk posi traction? There are also two 295/50 R15 Remington XT-120 radial tires and rims on the rearend, which appear to have very low mileage on them. The pickup truck housings are about 2" wider than a car housing. I doubt the whole rear end is from a Hawk. I think those tires would rub on the leaf springs. Limited slip known as 'Twin Traction' was a truck option from about 1957. Generally, the trucks have pretty low gear ratios, prompting some to install taller gears from a car rear end. It could very well have the carrier assembly from a Hawk.

For a "ball-park" figure of the axle ratio, try this.... Jack up the rear, safely secure it on stands, mark the tire,wheel, or brake drum.
Then mark the drive shaft or pinion flange. SLOWLY turn the wheel one full rotation, while counting the revolutions of the drive shaft. You should find ie, 3&1/3, 3&1/2, 3&3/4 etc. Hope this helps. OBTW, if you need the exact #, pull the diff cover
, it is stamped on the edge of the ring gear.

As usual, we agree Dwain. I'll let you get away with the "about 1957." IIRC, Twin Traction was an option in half ton pickups in 1956 and in cars starting in 1957. Another Studebaker-Packard first. Chevrolet did not have Positraction then, but young people still refer to limited slip differentials as posi units because they are the most common, but far from the first.quote:Originally posted by Dwain G.

A Hawk rear housing will not fit under a truck. Our 59 truck had 4:53 gears. We took the 'chunk' from a 60 Hawk, 3:73 gears. Now, you don't have to go into 2nd gear before you get out of the driveway...
BTW, Looks like you gotta 37 Coupe Express. NICE! I've driven one of those before,. in fast, the owner posts on this forum quite often...
