Ooops slip of the tongue Mr Biggs but I have read somewhere that there was ONE Champion hardtop built and yes, I would rather have that one if such an animal ever existed!

    Who could resist?!

Hmmm... A Champion Hardtop WOULD be a rare one! All the info I've read indicates only Commander & President hardtops were built.[}]

      Sorry Dude - couldn't resist![)]

OH - AND, of course, the PackardBaker hardtops. Musn't forget those!

Amazing, Bob; you/we really DO learn something new every day! To wit: I looked up production figures in The Standard Catalog of American cars just for grins...lo and behold: They record Studebaker as having built 120 units of model 58G-J4, 1958 Champion 2-door hardtop! [:0] 'First time I had ever noticed that. They were probably for export, because, like you, I've never seen them referenced for the domestic market. Weird! BP

Yeah, Studedude61's comment got me to thinking that such may well have been built for export, given that alot of the export stuff WAS 6cyl. Like you, Bob - I've never read reference to them!

Wonder if ANY of those 58G-J4s still exist someplace???[:0]

Thanks for looking up the production numbers on the 1958 hardtops. I KNEW I had read somewhere that there was one Champion Hardtop built but couldn't remember where. In the previous post I was talking about Commanders and Presidents but kinda had a brain fart at the time!

OK, imagine this as having been built and may exist somewhere in the world: a solid black 1958 Champion hardtop, single headlights in quad pods, black tires and wheels and dog-dish hubcaps, with no options. And remember, Champions had 15" wheels to boot.

What a piece that would be to show at an SDC International Meet. BP

The attention it would get would be similar to that of Pat Skelly's 53 Studillac got at the GA State Meet. (With me driving it, of course. []) His car was far from being the necest one, but is an original 53 Studillac done in the early fifties, and nothing has changed on it. With all the $30k+ restored cars, his got the most attention. Lucky guy... (He even gets to park it next to his 37 Dictator coupe [}])

He never did, that I know of. But he's gotten SEVERAL leads; just hasn't followed up on a few of them. Like Pat said, "If it's a Frick car, great. If it's not, who cares, this is a NEAT car!" And, he's right. It gets neater when you're spreading rubber all along a parking lot. (Pat's that one that "dropped the clutch", not me, I went 'easy' on it. )

Caddy powered Studebaker are neat, matter of fact I just bought a set of Hurst Caddy to Stude engine mounts on Ebay. It's just that you called it a Studillac and that just made me wonder if you found out something. Finding a Studillac survivor would be of great interest to everyone.

Well, it's definitley a survivor, a 50's hot rod project where everything is done 'right' and looks 'right', and hasn't been touched. It's a neat car, to say the least, but whether it's a Frick or not, your guess is as good as mine.
