  • Look what I found under the carpet!

I was pulling the rotted, ragged carpet out of a Daytona twin today and found this tag beneath the passenger seat, under the carpet:

Home of the incredible Mr. Ed!
    Lotsa Larks!
    K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Studebaker!
    Ron Smith
Where the heck is Lewiston, CA?

Where the heck is Fawn Lodge, CA?

COOL! Yeah, that's where you're gonna find if you're gonna find em!

    Miscreant adrift in
    the BerStuda Triangle

    1957 Transtar 1/2ton
    1960 Larkvertible V8
    1958 Provincial wagon
    1953 Commander coupe

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I decided to pull the front seat and use it in Bess whilst I rebuild her original. Since I was pulling the seat, I decided to remove the ragged remains of the carpet. The floor in this car is in good shape. There's rust where water had leaked in around the front doors. Still, the rust hasn't eaten all the way through. Most of the floor is still painted and in good shape. I find it kind of amazing really, as the outside of the car is just the opposite. The rear quarter panels are missing behind and level with the wheel wells. They've rusted away. The passenger doors are rusty as well. It's really a pity as this was a really nice car once. It's a three seat wagon. Not a very common car.

The rear seats and step will be going to Washington to refurbish another wagon. It has four excellent (rose mist) door panels and hardware. I plan on selling them on e-bay. There are a number of useful items still on this car. Like a complete (finned all around) power drum brake system. A vintage (Wards) AC system that's largely complete. And a good dash. I don't plan on messing with the dash though. Sadly, all the chrome inside was badly pitted.

That seat looks really small inside Bess. It's funny really. The bolt holes lined right up though.

WOW! nicely ordered car!! A Daytona Wagonaire, White(is that seat inserts?), 289 Eng. 4 Brl. Carb, Pwr. rear window, Pwr.Steering, Power brakes, White walls, Crankcase Ventilation and Tailgate step! Amazing!
I could not decode the rear seat, could be dealer installed or torn off of the factory order.

I found an identical style paper tag when I first cleaned out my '54 Champion, but it was under the trunk mat. It had a lot of the car's information listed on it.

The best thing I ever found under a floor mat was a 1945 steel penny. Oh, I also once found a couple of Sugar Babies but they were a little past their prime.

                        John,

The first car my dad ever bought new was a 1954 Ford 2 door Ranch Wagon (which is still rotting away at my mother's house). A number of years ago I looked in the glove box and there was a lolipop in there (an old style one with the loop) that I suspect was from my younger years.

I have found money, tools and other goodies including a micro Leatherman behind the seat of my F-350.

I believe what the rear seat refference is to the third seat, Rich. This was a three seat wagon. Cool, Huh?[8D] I really hate to take this car apart. Still, better to take it apart and re-use the parts than let the mice destroy them.
