  • 53 rod update

When I got my 53 coupe rod (383 Chevy stroker/dual fours/Munci 4 speed), it was a drag strip special. You could spend a few minutes in the pits starting and warming up the engine and off you'd go, but it stank for daily driving.
N8 added a coil bypass, I installed a manual choke, and rebuilt the primary carb, better, but no cigar. I would give it full choke and start it, then if it stalled, I had to push the choke in to clear the engine and try again. I bought a junk electric choke carb on ebay for $30 and moved everything over. Now, it starts right up, idles at maybe 2000 RPM for 30 seconds or so until it comes off choke, then a rupa-da rubs-da 1000 RPM idle. Once warm, just hit the key and it fires instantly. I feel much better about driving it now. BTW, it pulled like a freight train before I messed with it, and now I fixed the throttle linkage that was only giving me 3/4 throttle on the secondary carb. Time for a bonzi run in the A.M.<g>

I still love the sound of a Avanti cammed 289, but this car has awesome ripping sound when reving. It must be the nasty cam and high compression.

I think the dual 3" mandrel bent pipes don't hurt any either. I am still in awe of that exhaust system, it was made by a true artist.
