  • 61 Hawk

    Hi
I just joined the club and I am restoring my first Hawk (1961)
I am trying to find out the difference between the Golden and the Silver 1961 Hawk, and would like to know what the double T emblem on the trunk stands for.
    Thank you for your help

Welcome to the SDC. The Golden Hawk is a Hardtop, the Silver Hawk is a Sedan, and the TT designates that the car should have Twin Traction or Posi-Trac using the Brand X verbage

Golden Hawks were hardtops (K-body) only built from 1956-58. THe Silver Hawk was a coupe built from 1957-59. (C-body). The 61 Hawk was reffered to as just "Hawk", not Silver or Golden. Look at my picture website. There is a nice 57 Silver Hawk coupe in there that we finished not long ago. We had a 61 in our shop a while back, had the 4-speeed tranny and all. (The 4-speed came out in 61, as well as bucket seats. It was also the last year for tail fins and the C-body.)

There were no Silver or Golden Hawks in 1961 - only Hawks. C-bodied (pillard coupe body) Hawk was the only offering for '61. The TT emblem stands for Twin Traction - Which was a limited slip rear axle that provides better traction than the standard rear axle.

A 1962 Hawk is a "K" because it has no pillar behind the door all the way to the roof.

The easiest way to remember the difference is this: "C" means "Coupe."

Coupes have a pillar behind the door going from the roof to the rocker panel. In modern-day parlance, these are called "post" cars, although many of us die-hards cringe at such nomenclature nonsense.

Congrats on one of the last of the finned birds.
Even though GT's are better cars, esp if optioned out, to me no car ever said "Hawk" like the winged bird of prey.
People are just recently started to notice them and the prices are going up quickly. After walking past a row of 55-57 Chevys at a car show to suddenly see one of these beatuiful creations will stop most car lovers in their tracks.
I like all Studes, from the bullets, trucks,GT's and Avantis, but If I could just keep one,it would be a finned Hawk.

Hey Mr. Biggs, just want to let you know that I am 95% positive I WILL make in to So. Bend on '07. I graduate in 08, but we are planning to take a "pre-senior" trip to go up there to the meet. I can't wait. My little Daytona might even make it. It's a six cylinder so it does good on gas mileage. A good reason to drive it up. Maybe one of our Hawks will make it too.
