  • 12-Second Stude Tomato!

    !HE FINALLY DID IT!

Tonight (Saturday, October 1, 2005) Ted Harbit's R2 Stude Tomato firmly and finally broke into the 12s: 12.994 ET at 108.22 MPH!! [] Ted has been trying to get The Tomato into the 12s for a year, and it finally happened! [:0] Night air, good traction, and a 2.05 60-foot time all combined on the same run at The Muncie Dragway. YEE-HAA and congratulations, Ted!

[Yes, that kinda makes up for a corresponding tragedy this evening: Notre Dame[xx(] beating Purdue in West Lafayette IN.]

'Not sure on the tires, Bob. I'll find out today when we all reconvene at The Newport Hill Climb...[8D] and maybe see Lark Parker set a record in his wife's '55 Commander coupe with new rings, Lark reports.

Ted may have been using the AVON TYRES George bought for The Plain Brown Wrapper, or he may have left the Daytons on The Tomato that were on it for The Pure Stock Drags. Will post later today (Sunday the 2nd) after returning from Newport Hill. BP

Now that Ted's taken the Tomato into the 12s with the 289, this'll be the next little tweak he adds to it. Notice it's even the right color. It runs on high octane tomato juice.[:0]

I'm wondering just where the Paxton will bolt up.[}]

Lest we forget, our world might be a lot different today were it not for ALL the sacrifices made in the period 1939 to 1945. And the Rolls Royce Merlin V12 was one HELL of an engine (and still is today). Might I be permitted an "AMEN". And let's have peace now in the world as well.

I'd be real curious, Ted, how close to stock is the engine in the Stude Tomato? Can you tell us what the major mods are? Or is it too secret?

Bob: I saw Ted today at The Newport Hill Climb. Ted reported: The tires on that 12-second run Saturday were the same Dayton P235/70R15s we bought in panic mode for The Plain Brown Wrapper DURING(!) [:0] the 2000 Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race. Ted has had better luck with them on The Tomato than on The PBW, so that's where they "live" now. (PBW is doing better on Goodyear repro bias.)

More info from Ted on that 12-second run was even more illuminating:

FIRST: Ted said it was at about 3PM in the afternoon, not in the evening [:0] as I understood his brief e-mail late Saturday night to imply.

SECOND: Ted said he got the 12.994 withOUT [] speed-shifting!

Third, Ted said he thought he could have run even faster in the night air during ET-race eliminations Saturday evening, but he intentionally backed off during eliminations to avoid breaking out! Had he run all-out later Saturday evening, he thought he might have been able to better that 12.994!!!!!

                          YEE-HAA indeed!

                          Cheers. BP
