  • needs for my new 63 Lark

I'm sure the list of needs for this car will get bigger as I go thru the parts piled in the trunk but here's what I need fairly soon:
    a shop manual
Ignition cylinder with keys. It would be nice to get a complete set as I need door lock and trunk cylinders-they are long gone. The 70 year old fella I bought the car from lost the ignition key!
    Gas pedal assembly
    More to come
Is there anyone near London, Ontario that might have a parts car I could go thru?
I will eventually need a drive shaft for a 6 cyl/auto car too
    Thanks
    Todd

What model is your car? I have a 63 Lark Daytona Hard top with 6 cylinder with auto trans. I doubt yours is a Hard Top though, there wasn't that many built.

I believe that it would be best for you to simply replace the keys. If the locks are orignial, the production order, that you can get from the Studebaker National Museum, lists the key codes. New keys can be cut from these codes. The other way, is to take/ship your lock cylinders to a good locksmith and have keys made to fit these existing locks.
Most of the major vendors will sell you a reprinted shop manual or you could look for a used original at flea markets or on eBay.

Or, if your car isn't going to be a show car, just buy a new switch with keys. Can't you buy new heys (un cut) from Studebaker International?
P.S. Todd, your 14 right? How many Studes do you have? (I'm 15 and have 2; only one runs though)

            Why would you say:

"What model is your car? I have a 63 Lark Daytona Hard top with 6 cylinder with auto trans. I doubt yours is a Hard Top though, there wasn't that many built."

Six cylinder Hardtops were not all that rare, perhaps less tha half were sixes, but quite a few were built. I've owned a few, even a ragtop six cylinder or two.

Oh really? I didn't think that there were all that many. I know a ragtop is rarer, but a ragtop should have a 289, not a six. My Daytona should too, but I like it how it is. (I'm not a V-8 snob). But it doesn't surprise me at all to know that you have had a couple...

                two options on the locks:

                1) call SI and get a set of new lock cylinders with keys. They have 'em.

                2) get the key codes off the build sheet and have someone cut you keys to code. Then get an original ignition switch and have it rekeyed to match. "Shiva" on alt.autos.studebaker has done work like this for me in the past and it's worked out pretty well.

Option 2) is more labor intensive for you and takes more time but is cheaper.

                good luck,

                nate

Hi Todd- glad to see another Stude owner in the area. I'm about 10 minutes north of London. Did you buy the car that was listed in the Free Press last week? As far as parts go you will have no problems getting almost, if not everything you need right here in Ontario. There are two good parts vendors located near Peterborough. One with acres of parts cars. He owned dealerships when Stude closed down. Kept all his stock and has continued dealing ever since. I'll dig out the phone numbers for them when I get home tonight and e-mail them to you. Don Simmons mentioned earlier is located in Ingersol. He produces stainless exhaust specifically for Studes. He made up the exhaust parts for my 55 Champion. Very nice fellow to deal with and again with a lot of Stude knowledge. As far as brakes, shocks, etc. NAPA on Oxford East tracked down and ordered in my master cylinder, shocks and wheel cylinders. Had them within a few days. Good luck with your restoration.

                          Hey,
Yep, I bought the one in the Free Press. It was better than I expected. I still am amazed how solid the car is! I'd be interested in the vendors in Peterborough! Drop me a line at todd.st@rogers.com and maybe if you need parts we could share the gas money and go together.
                          Todd

I just put in a new ignition switch in my 64 wagon last night. I ordered it from SASCO. It came with 4 keys. Two were original S keys but two were chrysler keys. I have to get the door locks fixed to match, but the crysler keys fit just fine. They looked identical to an old key I had from an 84 Laser/Daytona.

Desertdoc- just a suggestion, it might be cheaper to have the new ignition lock rekeyed to match your old door locks. get a key cut to code first though (you do have your build sheet, right?)
