One thing I do like about the new cars is the slanted windshield...compare the Firebird/Avanti with the red 84 model in the above post.
Comparing those two does giveaway the age of the original design.

But a lot of great cars have vertical windshields...look at the classic E-Type Jaguar and period Ferraris.

You can modernize a classic design, but it's still hard to beat the original.

I believe that most of those original sketches for the Avanti, like the one posted above by Leonard, were done by Tom Kellogg. I have the original two seat Avanti roadster sketch that was on the wall in Palm Beach. It was drawn by Tom Kellogg, but signed by Raymond Loewy.

That Mustang site, quoted above, seems to forget/neglect the 1990 and 1991 Avantis.

Sorry, I guess I forgot um. I couldnt remember when the Monte Avanti
production ended. I thought it was 87ish to 89. Sorry!

I LIVE for bait but I will get to that ...

Thought provoking editorial Studedude, and I agree with what you are
saying. My hats off to YOU for spelling "Camaro" right! I can not
begin to tell you how often I see it wrong - even on the Camaro forum!
The new Avanti IS a tribute - mostly. The guys on the Mustang forum,
I mentioned earlier, have seen my Avanti in person, they think it is
cool, and invited me to join their group. Whats funny about that is,
after seeing the "Stangvanti"[], they asked why would they just make
a "replica" of the original? "Why not update it??" When I responded
that it was just that - an update like the new Mustang is a 1968, they
bawked the idea. The new Mustang isnt a replica of a 1968 Fastback! I
made that photo posting so they could see that it was the same idea.
Its a matter of prospective, they arent as familar with the Avanti, so
since it resembles an Avanti to that extent it looks like a replica to
them, to us, we see everything that is "wrong" with it. There are a
few styling areas I have a problem with, the removal of the rear quarter
window, the flat rear fenders, and flat trunk. Those areas could be
improved on, not be rip-offs of the original, but balance the design
          they have created.

The best looking four door in my opinion is the 1994-96 Impala SS, a
few BMWs since then, and Mercedes or two. My vote for the most ugly
4 door goes to - the new Dodge Charger - what WERE they thinking?? I
never liked the 4 door Avanti, but now that Dodge did that to the old
Charger name, the Avanti looks that much better now![:I]

Now to the bait .. I didnt invent them, I just did what Chip Foose
does, but he gets paid millions - I didnt even get _______.[]

EDIT: I agree with posting reduced pictures whenever possible, but it
is stuff found on the internet, and I didnt feel like downloading,
cropping, reducing and then hosting them. I reduce ALL the pictures
I take with my 8 megapixel camera down to 25% original size, then I
save them to 80% of the reduced quality. That usually gives me a
nice quality picture that loads fast, and is forum friendly.

          Tom

Ah .. but there is a simple fix for that as well, have you noticed
that you DONT have to scroll on ANY of my posts? Hmmmmm.

Just hit "enter" at the end of each line, when it touches the gray bar!

            Problem solved.

EDIT: I "fixed" three of them.

Thanks Dave. Yes, I also get tired of scrolling back and forth. Sometimes I don't bother. I am on a very slow dial-up connection and some of the picture posts take so long I just ignore them. And, yes Tom, I do not have to scroll on what you wrote, but I do have to scroll on what everyone else writes on threads with large pictures, not just yours.

It's off topic, but what the hay. I usually don't mind some oversized pictures only because I can see more detail. On the other hand I am glad all pictures are not overly big. Scrolling right and left can get tiresome.

The point I was trying to make is that EACH person posting can help
out everyone by making a simple change to how THEY post. If you look
at any of the posts I make on ANY of the car forums I frequent I do
the same courtesy. You will notice that when someone quotes what I
say, it will STILL keep the carriage return. I have "taught" a few
people on the Impala site to do this, & it really makes a difference.

It becomes a "tennis match" reading peoples posts, and its annoying.
"Carriage Return" is your friend ... and others!

It doesnt take being computer savvy, or any special steps, just tap on
the "Enter" key at the end of each line. The reverse of that is to
remove ALL the spaces from your post - sothateachwordbecomesone.
That can be used as a REAL annoyance, as you can make a post that is
about 5 screens wide - or as far as you want that bottom scroll bar to
travel! I do tend to get obsessed with making the right margin line
up though, so I tend to edit each post I make - its all making sense
                  now huh??[:I]

I wont create an example of the "wide" post here though.

The 2 seater Avanti used to belong to by Jim Bunting, of Lancaster, PA. He created the 2 seater from drawings, used in the development of the original Avanti. Tom Kellog was a partner and very instrumental in making the 2 seater happen.
Jim Bunting, along with Tom Kellog, later developed the AVX, which became the 2000 series Avanti's.
The 2 seater, sold on Ebay a few years ago for around $45K

Well, overall I try to be considerate of those on dialup, and also do
what I can to make those with high speed happy.

For those on dialup, you also hit the RED X (or red circle with white
                          X) on your browser, and that will "STOP" the page from loading. Then
you can put your cursor over the blank spot and it will show you the
file name of the picture, right click the picture, hit "S[u]h</u>ow Picture"
and it will load JUST that picture. This way you can pick and choose
what files you download. Try it.

I don't think that is a new site. It doesn't appear to have been updated since the Kelly Ponzi Scheme mess closed it down at the end of 2006.

You got me all excited... I've been waiting for news of the plant re-opening. Looks like I'm still waiting.

BTW, Bob Johnstone's comments are exactly how I understand it. At least that's the same information I found when I researched the Avanti story for the Docent class I teach at the California Auto Museum in Sacramento.
