  • A rare studebaker in the garage!

I need a little info about a Studebaker that is parked in my grandfathers barn. This car has been sitting in the barn for years, it is in great shape, it was fully restored back in the 80's from what I am told, and now is sitting on blocks in my grandfather barn coverend up. Here is the story as I have been told: My great grandfather who lived in NY bought this car after an auto show back in 1964. The car was a last ditch effort by studebaker to drum up some business. The car was designed to be a police chase vehical in Arizona and only 27 where origanally made, from what I have been told. The car still has the green and whit paint job (white fenders green doors etc..) It is a 4 door car with a build in roll bar, and has a avanti power plant under the hood (so I am told). I was just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this story and tell me about this car. I was told by my grandfather (Frank Bahmann) that there is only 8 of these cars left in the world, is this true. Any info would be great.
    Thanks

Sounds like you have a Y3 "Marshall" - I know Lee DeLaBarre has one, and he regularly watches alt.autos.studebaker so you might want to cruise over there.

I've driven his Marshall and it is a fun little car. I seem to remember Mr. Biggs having some choice words about the car though :P

Choice words? Only that it's a "Choice" car. Anything like that is Kool!

Next tme you are over there, get the numbers off the tag on the dash, and the plate in the door frame. Records of how Studebakers were built are still available from SASCO (I believe) and almost every detail of how this car was factory equipped can still be found. Might be interesting to see if the rarity of this find is true. There are people on this forum that can find the production build quantities for every year and model. Ask away!

That info's available from the Museum, Jeff. Not SASCO. But yeah - that would be the first step to confirming this cars pedigree.
I'd not said this earlier in this thread, but I seem to have read about this run of demo police cars that were built to promote sales thru showing them to prospective markets. I just can't recall WHERE it was that I read it.
