  • Studebaker histiory talk

On July 19th, Karl Haas will give a talk of the History of Studebaker at the San Diego Automotive Museum.
This is part of the "Third Thursday" series of free talks on various automotive sujects.
The illustrated history will cover the Studebaker story from the arrival of the sip Parle in Philadelphia through the remnants of Sudebaker today.
It should be 1 1/2 to two hours in duration, depending on questions and comments from those attending.
Plans are underway for a guarded dislay of Studebakers in front of the museum. Feel free to bring a Studebaker or any other car once asociated with Studebaker.

Visit the San Diego Automotive Museum, San Diego's premier transportation museum. Located in Balboa Park, our mission is to tell the story of the social and technological past, present, and future of motorized vehicles throughout its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs.

        Leonard,

That might be tough as the talk will occur a month after the South Bend meet this year.

Me thinks he refers to the ship "Haarle", from which the only three immigrants ever named Studebaker arrived in Philadelphia on July 1, 1736. Anyone named Studebaker descended from these three.

Thanks for the announcement, I'm going to put it in my calendar and try to videotape it as well. I won't be able to bring it to a meet, but I'll post it via YouTube or something.

Considering that the ship name starts with "Haa"
and the speakers name stars with "Haa".....

Anyhow, here's my first try at listing the likely subjects to be covered include (in no special order in this list):

The arrival of the first of the Studebaker brothers in the Haarle
                            (and mention of the SNF)

Dad and sons move to Ohio / Indiana

H&C shop, Wheelbarrow Johnny / Hangtown

Depositories and assembly places, domestic and overseas (using d'letteren as a late-era example.
History of Canadian plant and ending of production

Speed & endurance, Incl Indy, Bonneville and board tracks

Associated Marques (Probably not including 1965 Packard)

Designers, Interior (Dryden) and exterior Loewy
                            (including definition of "designer"

Defense work Civil war and WWII mostly, also 1960s "hand-out"

Studebaker after 1966 (including Newman / Altman)

                            A.R. Erskine and $$$ problems

SDC and other Studebaker clubs, perhaps including SAS and SOCA

                            Studebaker Museum

                            Dealers and "driveaways"

                            No mention of 1965 Packard.

Those wishing to tape should contact Kenn Closure at the SDAM for info and co-ordination well beforehnd.

There are other thigs in my mind, like politics, watches, Mr Fish

Comments welcome, but remember adding something means cutting or shorting other things.
