  • Who's hoarding the most stuff privately

I was just sitting here looking at some of the NOS items on eBay and it hit me. Who out there in Studeland has the biggest stash of Studebaker NOS parts, obvously from buying out defunct dealers and storing the stuff away. I mean, they don't sell any of the stuff, never have, nada. And what would a dreamer like me be able to find if they could just "look" at all the stuff. Could the days be arriving soon that some of these treasure troves will be sold off as their "collectors" pass on and the stuff starts showing up at York, South Bend and I'ntl meets in relatively large stockpiles? Just wondering out loud. Thanks

I would have said "Dan Webber" a year or two back, but he sold it all to a vendor. Most of the stuff was from dealers we bought out back in the 70's, most of his stash was untouched.

It is a good and bad thing that there is so much new stuff around.
We are lucky that there seems to be quite a bit left.
The bad side is that like what I'm going through.
My dad parted out a lot of Studes over the years.
I have stacks of starters, generators, brake drums, brake shoes, glass, chrome trim etc.
Because they are used parts nobody is interested in them.
So, I'm selling some of the stuff as I pick it out on Ebay.
But, I realize that most will be turned in for scrap metal.

            Hi, Don;

I note you are the Don Corea from Zionsville IN, just up the road! Any chance you can make it to our Indy Chapter Eats and White Elephant Auction tomorrow (Sunday, Feb. 25th) at Studebaker International in Greenfield? Arrive anytime after 12 Noon with a side dish for the table and your own table service. Formal eating begins at 1 PM.

Bring an oddity or any one item to sell in the white elephant auction that follows; it is a lot of fun and all proceeds go to the Indy Chapter Treasury.

(Obviously, this invitation is extended to anyone reading these words if you'd like to come by and see Ed Reynolds' SI "stash" in person! ALL are welcome.)

To answer your question about parts hoarding: Yes, there are many people who have large stashes of parts that aren't for sale, and some doggone big ones at that! [] However, by their very nature they can be private individuals and would probably just as soon not have their names posted on the internet...if they did, they'd be selling those parts! That's another good reason to attend the Indy Chapter auction; names and stashes can be discussed personally without posting world-wide. BP

                Thanks Bob,

And your right! It is me asking the question. Your also correct in that the "private stocks" are private for a reason and these folks probably wouldn't necessarily be interested in having all of the inquiries into their collections if names were named. As for tomorrow, I would love to attend if I could, but I'm on-call tomorrow which is a bummer. You never know when I would discover one of those hard to find items for the Sky Hawk. BTW, the Hawk is still not finished and now its OVER 3 years on the body work that was only to take 3 months!!!! I guess it's a good thing that I'm only in my early 40's so I should still be able to drive the car if it is finished in say, the next 30 or so years. The car was straight to begin with, dry and originally from California. I will centainly invite you over here to Zionsville when I get the car. I believe you did see the car in the shop about 2 years ago. I has not progressed much since then, though some of the car is actually painted. So if I can sneak away tomorrow, I see you at Ed's place, Thanks, Don

There is need for those starters and generators and brake drums. Even if it is "used" chrome, some might be an excellent candidate for re-plating.

Some of the best parts that I have found have been from private individuals. Ebay's greatness in my opinion is for literature. A quick bit of advise....when you find these individuals be straight with them and don't beat them up on the price even if it might be a little more than you expected. From my experience the reason why they won't sell stuff or don't want people coming over to look at what they have is because they have had a bad experience in the past. I have two sources that I go to and once our trust was established, everything worked out.

The longer that even the used stuff stays around the better it will be for folks who own studes in the future. We need to think ahead for the next generation of stude lovers. I believe one thing that attracts, and will attract people to collect studes is that the parts are easier and sometimes cheaper to get than other brand x collector cars. So all those used parts may seem to be collecting dust and not doing anybody any good right now, they will go on to help keep the name going. And when storage becomes a problem, I'm sure that someone will be glad to take that stuff off ur hands. Just trying to help. thanks
