Well the engine is out (Pics)

Well my father (davepink53) and I spent a good part of the weekend out in the garage working on removing the engine and gear box out of my 63 avanti. We decided to drop the gear box from under the car and remove the engine on its own. Although not a really difficult job, we have decided it will be easier to re-install it as one unit.
Now the fun and expensive part, the engine and gear box are going off this week to be fixed up and while they are gone dad and I are going to do all the other jobs that need to be done. Next weekend we are going to repair the passenger side hog trough which has a little rust in it.

We are doing all this work because I am planning to drive the Avanti and dad is also taking his 53 Champion across to Western Australia next year for the Australian Studebaker National Meet. The trip is going to be around a 8000 kilometer plus (5000 mile for you Americans) round trip.

and we all ask: is that a crankcase ventilator hose coming from the oil pan ? big hose..same as the heater hoses too.

The big hose goes to the air cleaner, a smaller one goes to the PCV valve.

Nice to see a father and son working together on this type of project! Man I thought I was doing something by getting a few cars ready to drive to So Bend in May which is around 80 miles and you guys are going thousands! that is dedication! Wish you all the best of luck. Ed

Those are kick plates that fix to the front of the rear guards on Vintage and Veteran Studebakers, mostly just for decoration, I think.

Well the gear box needs some attention, it crunchers when I change gear and sometimes I have trouble shifting down gear. Hoping it only needs new syncros. The Engine needs new seals, the rear main leaks faster then I can fill it with oil and the water pump needs to be replaced. The engine does run well, but while it is out of the car its going to be pulled down and checked over

Be sure to inspect the shift linkage assembly when you have it out. They weren't the best setups to begin with, and after all these years of use they don't get any better. The shift rods can bind and bend, and then there's the notorious rattle from the shifter assembly. Either way I wouldn't trust an original setup after 40+ years of use. You might want to consider a new Hurst setup -especially if you're going to rebuild the tranny. The new Hurst units make a world of difference. The only catch it you might have to modify the stick if you want to retain a stock look. The new ones come with a flat bar, but I think one of our vendors might have a modified kit... can't remember who -maybe Dave T-Bow? You could also weld up your own using your old shifter.
