  • Correct decklid for 66 Daytona

Working on my 66 Daytona 2dr. I have a replacement trunklid for it that I removed from a 64 Challenger and I noticed that on the underside between the inner frame work it is sprayed with the sound deading/undercoating like you would find on the underbody of the car and would this eventually be a problem at a meet for judging? My all original 66 Commander has what looks like some sort of a asphalt type material in betweem the rib openings.

Both types were used, I would not worry about it! [^]
Replacement lids did not always match the factory installed ones either.

Probably a U.S. vs Canada thing.

You are just very lucky to have a good rust free '64-'66 Trunk lid, very rare since few replacements were made before the die broke.

I always liked the '64/'65 Commander trim version the best with the cool new style "Studebaker" script and only the center moulding, the '66 looks too plain.

My 66 trunk lid has a insulation fibre of some sort that looks that it must of been installed before the inner and outer pieces were put together .

That is how my 66 Commander looks also and that is how this replacement decklid looks also with the sound deadner/undercoat. It looks like it was sprayed on then the two panels were assembled. You can see where the inside reinforcement panel may have slid a little before permanent placement.

Mine also has the same type of material.

It would be nice if you can find one in the same color as your car. Generally, the paint on the underside of the trunklid remains in fantastic shape and only needs a good waxing. I don't intend to paint the underside of mine here within the rubber gasket.

Well gee Craig, if you do that, how are you going to find a "Plum" '66 Stude. to put it on?

Here is how most original U.S. built Lark trunk lids looked, with the spray-on insulation:
