  • STUDEBAKER history for 3/17/10

    Today in 1966 the last Studebaker was built in Canada.
    A sad day indeed I think Ill toast a green beer today in memory of this great car manufacturer.

      We keep on repeating this myth. The last Studebaker was NOT built on March 17th! It rolled out the door at 8 A.M. in the morning of March 17th. Stu Chapman was there and has written about this before. The press was invited to this "ceremony" at 8 in the morning. Production had actually ceased the previous day - March 16.
      So, it depends on how we word it. If we say the last Studebaker was [u]BUILT</u>, the date is March 16. If we say the last Studebaker rolled off the line (or out the door), the date is March 17. Actual production ended Wednesday, March 16.

            Today in 1966 the last STUDEBAKER rolled out of the factory so the press could show up even tho the cat was built the prior day,today. STILL a very sad deal. Im getting another green beer

                Joe , I have an original of that picture. The car shows up kind of a purple / blue but it must of been the lighting inside the plant that made it look like that . Also remember it was 1966 , color photography on a cheap home type camera might not of been too good .
                Should mention it really is Timberline Tourquoise.
