Looks like the Vertex mags you are familiar with except the bottom end fits a Studebaker.

Interesting. Was this some kind of factory option?

BTW- if you put a reply to a quote AFTER the "[/quote]" it will appear as a response instead of part of the quoted text.

For us uneducated "What is a Vertex Magneto" and "What does it do"?

It takes the place of the distributor for racing
applications, producing it's own spark w/o battery.

Replaces the distributor, make a spark just by rotation.

"The Vertex magneto is just the ticket for High Performance engines, it is very compact and lightweight. It is completely self-contained and operates at ignition distributor speed (one-half engine speed). Vertex is entirely independent of the battery as it generates its own high tension alternating current and its sophisticated design incorporates an internal coil. No complicated installation procedures, simple, quick and easy replacement without any engine modification necessary. Installed in the engine in the same manner as the battery ignition distributor."

We use them on Supermodifieds because the cars have no battery, starter, or transmission. The dirt mods have all that, but they use them too, for reliability.

The main reason for magnetos is that the faster the engine runs, the hotter spark they make, just the opposite of distributors. They were high tech fifty years ago.

That said, modern (ie, the last 30 years) electronic ignitions produce hotter spark and more accurate timing at all revs than either.

Still, a Vertex magneto has a lot of sentimental value, just like an Ardun head for your flathead Ford.

This is the one I'm hunting for. As used at Bonneville on the R3 Hawk.
