  • Beast of an engine FS

Price looks pretty fair if it checks out, and should be easy to do so. Turn your mild-mannered Stude into a monster!

Yes, it seems to have been built by someone who knows how and is easily worth $4500. Guarantee it can't be built for less money without owning an engine shop.

    Three JMHO thoughts:

    1. Why all caps in the copy? Just makes it difficult to read and lessens the credibility of what is being said.

    2. What does "ALL ALUMINUM, R3 R4 CLONE ENGINE ." tell us? I can see a LS repop intake, but the rods, pistons, heads, oil pan don't seem to be that spec.

    3. For that level of build, line-hone and deck the block and a full pro head porting would be the way to go.

    4. [u]Hypereutectic</u>

All in all, proof Stude engine building is becoming more professional. It will be interesting to watch the bidding, as we are beginning an even higher-dollar engine build with roller rockers and forged pistons.

    thnx, jack vines

Glad you posted, Jack. Looks like a nice piece, and were I interested here's what I'd do:

      1. See if I could determine if the seller is known within the SDC

      2. What really caught my eye was the mention of Myer's; I'd call them and see what they think of it

      3. Post it here and solicit the thoughts of the knowledgeable, just as you have shared

      4. Ask for receipts and pictures of specific items as recommended

The high opening bid is likely to deter anyone from bidding unless they want to hit the BIN, so one would likely have time for due dilligence. If the price was super-low, one might have to jump on it and take a chance it was OK. In this case, I think there's time to check it out. What would satisfy me? Known seller, seeing receipts, having a knowledgeable member look at it in person, pictures of critical parts, and the right answers to my questions; at least a couple of these criteria met would likely get me to bid.

If I bought it, before I did anything I'd spend the extra money to a known Stude expert for examination. (A good example can be found in the question posted on the lising- I wouldn't have known to ask that). Personally I'd likely use Myer's simply due to relative proximity. Once a pro has given the OK, I could set about detailing it and getting it in my car and ready to fire![]

Sometimes people ask how to go about making decisions on big-ticket items they want. Hopefully the above can be of some help in that regard

The title says 289 cid yet his write up says its a 259 block that's bored 0.060" over. If someone wants an engine ready to go and you can find out more details about who rebuilt this engine and if they have a good reputation then maybe its a good deal. I have spent more than that on mine with Michael Myer personally doing all the work and providing the parts. But then he is essentially building me close to a race quality engine although I don't intend on using it for that purpose.

        Here are the details:

Michael Myers is doing a complete frame off restoration/ modification of my 1963 Avanti and has finished my engine rebuild. It is the original matching factory block to my car which is 63R2386 with a final assembly date of 12/31/62 on the purchase order. It was an R1 with Automatic, PS & factory air.

The rebuild involved block cleaning (not 2 dips and flushs but 4 times) cylinders bored 0.060" over increasing 289 cid to 299 cid. Everything was magnafluxed and balanced. Michael took my R1 heads and ported them to accept R3 stelite valves. He benchtop tested air flow after porting heads and achieved a 25% increase. Replaced cam with an R3 276 deg cam. Installed hyperteutic pistons, Lionel Stone aluminum intake manifold and R3 headers. The engine will receive an Edelbrock AFB carb, Paxton SN-60 supercharger and Mopar HEI ignition. The York factory AC compressor will be removed and a Sanden R134a compressor will be installed on the engine at the approximate location of the surge tank which will be removed. Mike has found me a bellhousing with GM bolt pattern and the automatic is being replaced with a Tremec TKO 5-speed.

The valve covers will be rechromed but at the time pictures were taken had yet to be done ...

Yes Dave I can make out the name and even some of the totals on the credit card receipts. And based on the prices I would say he purchased basic rebuild items .... because believe me the complete Myer's rebuild is just a little more expensive. CASO's need not inquire !!! [8D]

You're the one who asked about the name of the seller, Ensign Not So-Obvious.
