  • From the Archives #36 (1936 Studebaker and lion)

The guy with his back to the camera is famous lion tamer and Studebaker owner Clyde Beaty (1903-1965). Beaty was affiliated with the Cole Brothers Circus that was headquartered south of South Bend. At the height of his career he had 40 wild animals in his act. The "cat" on the hood of the 1936 Dictator is Leo and he is just a bit "out of sorts" because Beaty has his chair and he is being forced to sit on the Studebaker.

When I was living at home on the farm, I used to get pretty peaved when the barn cats would walk on my black car leaving "pootie" prints all over it. This takes it to a whole new level![:0]

Great picture Richard and a great reminder that the Clyde Beatty and Cole brothers Circus is still going strong to day travelling from town to town all summer long!!!

Wasn't there a Clyde Beaty radio show in the late '40s or early '50s? He looks like the prototype for Indiana Jones.

A cat that big sitting on the hood of a new car would cave it in. No manufacturer would dare try a stunt like that now.

CAL WORTHINGTON AND HIS DOG, SPOT!

Go see Cal, go see Cal, go see Cal!

I remember the front end of the '65? Dodge Dart dipping down to the ground as Cal's tiger loped across the hoods of the cars.

If you never saw Cal's ads, they were the classic car dealer's ads. I think he sold in Texas as well as California. His ads are probably on youtube, everything else is...[)]

Last I heard (7-10 years ago?) he was retired and living on a ranch north of Sacramento.

It's comforting to know that next time I see pawprints across my hood from one of our more ambitious strays, that it pales in comparison to seeing a pair of bulging fenders, pawprints, and some deeply rooted claw marks it's larger brethren will make across a hood [)]. IE, it could be worse, lol.

I will say that the larger cat there puts on a great show. A much larger more feral cousin crossing the hood, FTW .
