Paul...that car of yours is simply gorgeous! The 500's look like they're designed for that car.

What you said about wires is right...a friend in my Corvette club has wire wheels on one of his Vettes...he says it takes 2-3 hours each to clean and polish them. As beautiful as they might be, I'm not about to invest that kind of time and effort maintaining them...I'd rather be driving the car. That doesn't include such drawbacks as their added unsprung weight, keeping them tuned and balanced, tubes, etc.

Although these rims are hard to clean I like them on my R-2. They are sold wire rims originally made by Star Wire and now on by Craeger.

Just to tell a little I know of the Magnum 500 wheels. Chrysler used them in the 70'. Ford, GM. Sometimes with beauty rings as the outer part of the wheels were not chromed. Some makes used the wheel completely chromed except for the black painted over chrome near the lug nuts. You can buy the complete chrome one made by wheel vintiques for about 160.00 from Summit or Jegs. 12.00 shipping for all 4. I think the centers are extra. They come in 14" and 15". Good news is that 15 x 6 with proper backspace is available. Nice looking wheels for a Studebaker. Dogs poop then you scoop.

I agree with Gunslinger re wire wheels. They look good, but what a pain to maintain. When I showed my '83 at an International, it took me a full day to detail the four wires after having driven the car to the meet.

Magnum 500 style wheels are made now in one piece aluminum in diameters up to 18", though significantly more expensive. If I was looking to buy new tires as well, that would be a nice upgrade...the same great look plus significant weight savings as the steel Magnum 500's are quite heavy.

They are six inch width. I don't know the back spacing right off hand. As soon as enough snow is gone to allow me back in the barn I'll measure the one that isn't mounted. The ones I have came off a '70 Avanti which had Studebaker brakes so I know they will fit later drums and Bendix disc brakes. I do know that they won't work with Turner brakes (don't know about the new manufacture ones).

                      Paul...

The Magnum 500 wheels MAY fit the Turner brake conversions. It simply depends on the backspace of each particular wheel. On my '70 Avanti I installed the Turner kit and two of the Magnum 500 wheels clear the calipers and two don't. It turns out that, even when all four wheels are 15"x6", two have about 3/8' different offset and a spot on the calipers scrapes. I guess it depends on the individual manufacturing lot the wheels come from. They fit the stock Bendix/Dunlop brakes with no problem, so I'm sure Avanti Motors had no reason to question the difference when they ordered them for inventory.

I simply keep the two wheels that don't clear on the rear of the car, but it does preclude rotating the tires without completely breaking them down and remounting and rebalancing them. The calipers could probably be ground down where they scrape the rim, but it's not a big deal and an easy situation to live with.

Does anyone have a photo of a 53 or 54 C/K Stude sporting Magnum 500's. Would like to see if they suit the car. Sure do like the Daytona with the 500's. Thanks, Junior

These are the ones I bought for my 64 Avanti. I do have steel tech brackets with the GM Calipers.

One of the many reasons I went with aftermarket wheels. I lost a hub
cap too often and had to go back and look for them.[:I]

Never cared for the Magnum 500s, our '69 Avanti had them, they went to
the salvage yard and are probably a Prius by now.

I went with 17" Cobra wheels to match the original hub cap style, but
with a modern look. Everyone likes something different.
