  • Avanti rear view mirror recommendation

Hi all, I have a 63 R2, and it has a cheap, gray plastic rear view mirror that is mounted too close to the windshield to enable it to be adjusted enough to see out the back window. I looked in the SI catalog for a replacement, but did not see anything.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a rear view mirror that fits the Avanti? Was the originally all black, or was it a chrome/SS unit? Anyone know the size/length? Or does anyone have a original that they would like to sell.

The factory had two mirrors, way too little, and too little. Most drivers swap a brand X mirror after the show. Ford's from the 70's work as I recall.

I have a universal that is available at most any parts store. I mounted it up high rather than the original down low position. I couldn't drive it the other way.

I have an NOS original (little) Avanti mirror and also a used larger day/night mirror for the ball mount that has a beefier ball adapter, if you are interested. Personally I prefer a mount in the upper location. I found an 8" black plastic day/night mirror with a shoe mount at a Cdn surplus store that works well in the Avanti in the upper location. A good glass shop will glue the shoe to your windshield. I advise not trying to adhere it yourself as you will end with the mirror and mount in your face or in the back seat - happened to me! These mirrors come with a little tube of silicone for shoe mounting. Be sure to throw that away. Mark the location that you want for the mount with masking tape on the outside of the windshield. The glass shop will prime that spot and then attach the shoe. They should advise you to wait for a period of time (a few hours) before sliding the mirror onto the shoe. You can leave the original mirror in the lower location for judging purposes. I doubt that you would be docked points for the better mirror as it is a road safety matter.

The original mirrors are tiny, but cool. I simply had to put an original back in my Avanti. Note that the fastener will need to be modified slightly to get a tight fit so the mirror doesn't constantly droop. I understand this problem was a factory defect noted in a service bulletin. btw. I think someone has a factory Avanti mirror on eBay right now...[8D]

If you follow the directions and use a good adhesive like 3M you
should have no problem attaching a rvm shoe to your windshield.
Another option would be early 70's GM which screws to the moulding
            above the glass.

With the Service letter instructions on tighting the stem and the dual fender mounted mirrors I don'y have any problem seeing whats behind me. Retain origanility, but thats me.

Agree. One of the first things I did was get rid of the crappy stick-on replacement rear view mirror and install the small original.

My car has an original (whether it's the small or slightly larger one I don't know since I have no frame of reference) but the PO used a small convex plastic item attached with a suction cup up where most rear view mirros are.
It works great and easy to remove if I go to a show.
