The Avanti has always brought out strong reactions in people, both positive and negative. Obviously we here on the forum love it.

The president of Checker, of all things once declined to produce the Avanti after the Studebaker years because he considered it an ugly car!

Such lists are pointless. Virtually every car ever made has an enthusiast fan club. You like what you like, and it would be boring as hell if we all had the same cars that never tried to break new ground.

That source; auto-car-shop.com is a business failure trying to claw their way to higher click throughs. Unfortunately they do not have enough money for an editor to correct that awful nonsensical opening sentence, or a layout editor to line up the cars with the text.

What they did succeed in doing is to get a litle Internet buzz going as we all checked it out.

The one shown, I believe, is the Stangvanti that was made in Mexico,
the last Avanti before Kelly was jailed for stealing money to make a
car now on the top 10 list of ugliest cars. Thats gotta hurt. Twice.

Apparently not the Aztek. Not on SDC anyway.

If any of you own one of those ugly cars and want to get rid of it, I'll step up and give it a very nice home.

Ugly is a relative term. Some say the Avanti failed because it was ugly, however the 59 Chevies and 60 Fords were considered ugly also. That didn't stop people from buying them. I say the Avanti failed because it was a Studebaker. Ford and GM, in those days, could get away with styling that was "ugly"

One man's opinion does not make a statement for the world. many either love it or hate it when it comes to the Avanti design, regardless of the year built. I for one love the car and always will defend it to the best of my ability. There were other cars on that list that were not so ugly either. So let's start a campaign to promote the Avanti and show the world what a great car it really is.

The text appears to be a poor translation from an Eastern language, probably Japanese. As we all know they are world renowned experts on ugly cars. They sure have built enough of them!

Just send a couple of those hideous Avantis to Interglobals in Hayward and I'll help out by going halvies in shipping them "down under" where people won't know what they are. That should save a lot of embarrassment and if I put Porsche badges on them, that will really fool 'em all...
