Rumble seats

I enjoyed the article in the December Turning Wheels about the 1936 cars.
They certainly look neat. I love the coupe's rear window and how the shape was mirrored on the dash and clock of some models.

I'm no expert on 30s cars, but I was a bit surprised that anything in 1936 would still have a rumble seat. There couldn't have been many built after that.

Was that the last Studebaker with outside seating? Anyone know about the rest of Detroit?

In '61(?) Stude offered a rumble seat in a Hawk and Lark. Seriously.

I've never owned a car with a rumble seat...but I have had lots of cars with seats that rumbled!

I am not sure when they were phased out, but I have owned both a 36 Ford and a 37 Chevy with rumble seats.

I knew that early Mustangs had a dealer or aftermarket rumble seat option, and here is a 69 that was reportedly just that.

Wow! Gary, two of those terrific coupes on one field. How rare is that? I love those bat wing rear windows. I think the 36 coupes had rear windows that would pivot open and the 37's were fixed. I would really love to have one but would probably wear it out just driving it around the neighborhood. I would probably have to have surgery to remove the permanent grin from my face.

I think the third seat option in a sliding roof Wagonaire counts as a rumble seat being that you climb in from the back (fold down step built into the tailgate) and you sit far in back and have open air above your head (with the roof open). Furthermore, the seat folds down to be inconspicuous and it doesn't have seat belts. [8D]

1937 was the last year Studebaker offered a rumble seat. In the photo above posted by Gary1953 the 2nd maroon car in the background is a Lincoln Zephyr not a Studebaker.

Now that you pointed it out Richard, that is even more remarkable. I had an elderly neighbor that would have me drive his '39 Zephyr to the shows for him as he and his wife drove their 28 Chevy. After a couple of trips, I finally asked him why he wouldn't drive the Zephyr and he said he couldn't shift it without grinding the gears. Then he asked me if it bothered me. I told him that I used to have an old model A hot rod with one of those Zephyr transmissions. It would also grind the gears, but my Dad taught me how to double clutch it and it worked fine. Same with my neighbors zephyr. The few shows I drove it to and all the shows I saw it at...won first place in its class and several best of shows. Same color as the one in this picture. My neighbor died several years ago and I don't know what happened to the car.
