  • What NOT to do with a 1960 Champ truck

I saw who might be the craziest Studebaker "hater" I have ever seen! I am writing this on halloween. We just got back from the South Bend Motor Speedway, they put on a demolition derby tonight, the "Halloween Crash-N-Bash." It was a really fun, but cold, evening. Except for one part of the show, the trailer race. For those of you who dont know what a trailer race is, it is a demolition type of race where junk cars or trucks get a junk trailer of any kind, usually decorate it with junk, like boats. And race with trailers attached to the car. You get disqualified if over 50% gets destroyed, or have mechanical failure, etc. Now heres where this involves Studebakers. As you probably guessed, a trailer race is a very destructive form of race for the car/truck and trailer. Well, some idiot used a 1960 Studebaker Champ pickup truck to pull his trailer in the race![:0][V][xx(][B)][?][}] I just dont get it! Before the evenings events started, they had all the drivers bring the cars and trucks on the track for "Trick or treating", Im a little old for that, but I still went on to the track to look at this poor Champ. The underside was a little rusty, but not a danger to the frame. ALL of the sheet metal was PERFECT, not a dent anywhere. The doors glass and rear window were removed, but the front windshield was not only clean, but NO cracks. The grille was painted black, but still straight! He did change the engine to a big block chevy.[xx(] Changed the wheels. Point is, before he messed up a rare and valuable truck, it could have been a good project truck or, gee, I have been looking for a champ as a daily driver and all this idiot wants to do is smash it! So I went down and talked to the driver. He did not really impress me either. I introduced myself and said Im a big fan of Studebakers and literally a "Card carrian" member of the SDC. Didnt seem to phase him that the truck was valuable. Heres his quote: "Well, I got the piece of junk for $100 and I plan on smashing it all the way around the track!" Again:[xx(][V][}][B)][:0][?] After that I just went back to my seat and hoped he would pop a tire and get black flagged or something! Ok, fast forward to the race. It was a 20 lap race. Sure enough on lap 11 on turn 3, POP! Gone is his right front tire, black flagged! And the best part is, it survived with no damage! He pulled onto the infield and got out. I didnt get his name, but he is from the South Bend area. If anybody could locate him and wants the truck, he would probably sell it for around $200 as he got it for $100. From what I could tell, it was the short box model and this one had a moon roof in the top. It dosent have a tailgate or rear fenders. I'm still in shock that somebody would run a vintage truck, regardless of make, in a trailer race![:0][?] Whats your thoughts?

Sounds like the ghosts of Studebakers past spared it from catostrophic damage. I think you are meant to buy this truck and save its life. If need be, I will start a petition and have everybody here put their names on it in order to force you to purchase it!

Get it! Get it! I'll sign the petition! You need it for your farm! Run with the chevy engine, and when that goes south, replace it with a stude engine, or when you got the extra $$$ to get one! Then, you might be able to have something to install those trinkets I'm sending ya!

Yeah, come on Chris, you need it to haul your Lark tractor around! [8D] You may have to pay this guy more than $200 though, as he sounds like the type of person that doesnt appreciate American made products.

yeah, no kidding. It would take some work to get it road worthy again, but doable. I would get it now, but I'm working on fixing up and moving to a house in rolling prairie near the proving grounds. Need to get my shop reestablished first! I also need to track down where this guy lives to see if I even can get it. I just hope hes not one of these who would kill a Stude just because, ya know?[V]

Don't feel too bad, Chris. Keep in mind that ALL classic car lovers represent a rather small percentage of the general population, and those that love Studebakers are a small percentage of that... not to mention there is a significant percentage that not only doesn't care about classic cars but is actively trying to have them all banned from the roads! So we have to accept that there will continue to be great old cars- including Studes- lost forever. Can't get too mad at the guy- it's just his perspective. Heck, if somebody wants to demo-derby every Toyota out there it's just fine with me![8D]

In my younger days I did plenty of demo derbies, including advancing to big-dollar regional ones with the pros, and won a few (someday I'll have to scan a picture of my biggest win in the Disco Caddy[:I]) but can't bear to watch them anymore. These days the pros are always using 60s and 70s Chryslers and 71-77 full-size GM wagons- some of the best cars ever built, and some of my most-loved cars! It's still a free country, so they have every right to do so, but it truly hurts my heart to see it But, c'est la vie...

But there is good news in this case- the truck did not get totaled, and you have a real chance at snatching it from the jaws of doom! Start by contacting the Speedway management- tell them what you want and ask them for the owner's contact info. Alternatively you might be able to find a fellow competitor who knows him and will put you in touch. When you find him chances are you might be able to deal. I'll guess he won't want to part with the highly desirable BBC engine, but you can probably get the rest for cheap. Maybe you can find another old beater truck you could trade for his. Or maybe he won't. Best you can do is try!

If you need it I would be willing to kick in a few bucks toward the Save the Champ fund. Go for it and keep us posted!

I used to work @ The SBMS. Nothing suprises me anymore when it comes to someone smashing up something.Sunday morning around 10 am the derby drivers are let in to get the vehicles they did not get out Saturday night. If they are left there Sunday, the track owner keeps and scraps them.Go out there this morning and see if Mr.Derby Driver has picked up the Champ. He might just sell it .

If not today, he shouldn't be too hard to track down unless
that was the last derby of the year. A blown tire is all that is
keeping him from going right back and doing it again. Just
be there when he shows up. Of course the track would have
his entry name and contact info if you're really serious.

Rich is right, though, today is the day to buy it if it's still
there...he has less motivation to keep it. I bet he'd just settle
for his $100 back. The only reason he would want more is if
he smells a South Bend steel hugger.

Hmmm... well, if a few other people would be willing, I'd be willing to donate a few shekels to the,'save the Champ' fund. I know you were'nt soliciting this, Chris, but you are there... We aren't.

I once saw a finned Hawk driven in a demolition derby in the early 70's when I lived in Arkansas. It was put out early in the derby damaged of course.
