Well said, i can't understand why so many don't understand why and for whom the $5.00 was charged. And i can't for the life of me understand why there is so much hash over $5.00. I'm with you on the principle thing.

Here's a clue for the clueless come to the meets be it one day,one hour or the full schedule. Register, get your goodie bag, buy your t-shirt, get your badge, attend what you want. Look at all the cars visit old friends or make new ones. And feel good that you supported YOUR SDC and the folks that put on the meet.

One reason we are given a badge is to wear the entire time of the meet. That should serve as a pass for any of the International venues that are on that week. (Not counting tours, banquet, etc. that one pays over and above as an option.) If we want to really go high-tech, then a bar code can be printed on them as well and the entrances can be monitored by attendants with scanner guns to keep track.

Milt glad to hear your family is getting some interest, it is that way some times with family's interest comes and goes , when it comes back we want to be part of it, with the way the national meets have been going on and off every other year with the time of year they have it only some people in my family can go , if school is on only Ian and myself go if school is out then we have anywhere from 7-10 people go and we go in the motor home as we did this year in Cedar Rapids, the years we have more going when I register I put all the names of those going down and they get name badges and are part of the meet and go to the different places swap ect. If this was to change I might think twice about going as the extra cost would then add more dollars to the already high cost of traveling across the US and staying in extra rooms when we get there. still $5.00 to get into the swap "if not" registered is not unreasonable..Bob

I have to pipe in one last time on this subject. My objection to the $5,00 fee was about the non member seeing the meet signs and maybe not even knowing there is an SDC, being told he has to pay a fee just to see what is inside. That could be a turn off to a new prospective member. As far as some of our CASO members not paying for the registration, they should pay the fee. I am proud to be a CASO only because that is how my budget works out for me.

Dick, the fee only applied to the inside area at the swap meet. Anybody could go view the cars in the judging field for free, and certainly view the cars for free at the hotel parking lot, too.

And they didn't even have to pay to park.

Would it have been less objectionable to charge $5.00 for parking, and give free entry to the swap? Remember, the swap is really only going to be of interest to hard-core Stude people.

If somebody is SO cheap, that they attend a meet without registering, then they ought to get dinged the five bucks for the swap, IMHO.

I know we are a Cheap A$$ bunch but all this carping about $5.00 is astonishing. In my many years of membership I have been to only 3 IM's. In each case I spent several hundreds getting there, staying there and buying parts and souvenirs. I should complain about $5.00 to get in to the swap meet? Come on.

To answer the questions directed to me above, I paid for a registration for my family. I did not take a Stude so I did not register one. I thought the $5 fee was for each time you entered the building, I did not pay that close of attention I guess. I would not have spoken if I knew it was just $5 per day. Maybe they can modify it to give a one day pass to non-members to allow them to look us over.

I still do not understand why folks do not register. I attended my first meet in 81 and have probably attended 2/3 of them since then and have always registered.
                    Thanks

At the risk of protracting this thread until the next ice age, I will try to respond to your original complaint. The IM policy states that a single $20 registration covers two adults 19 and over, with no charge for those under 19. This policy was adopted to allow entrance to a typical family of two parents and their kids. Persons 19 years old are considered to be adults, and are supposed to pay their own way.

I understand your annoyance at being asked to pay the registration fee for your adult children in order to inculcate them into Stude culture, but the IM policy was drafted to cover the average situation, and cannot include enough exceptions to accommodate every possible family situation. The IM policy is already six pages long, and will probably get even longer.

As has been noted above, most meet events are available to all attendees, whether they register or not. The only ones that are not are the swap meet, extra-cost events, and (more recently) welcome night. (Welcome night used to get you an ice cream cone, but since Lancaster has included a full meal. It's starting to cost real money to provide dinner to 1000 people.)

SDC and its chapters are not-for-profit, and there are limits to how complicated we can make things and still expect unpaid volunteers to handle them. (Most of them never have a chance to attend the meet that their chapter is sponsoring as it is.) Compromises are a necessary part of life. In many towns, property taxes provide for most of the funds for schools. With no kids, I pay the same amount for schools as my next-door neighbor, who has four kids. Is that fair? Probably not. Is it reasonable? Yes, given the fact that there is no other practicable way that the city can administer the process. It's a necessary compromise.

$5 each would have gotten each of your adult children's families into the swap meet for a day -- or $20 each for the whole show. I don't think that's unreasonable. The board decided on this course as an approach that might improve the number of people actually registering for the meet. That's still the goal.
