  • Opinions $5 Charge to see Parts at Int. Meets

Is SDC hurting for money to charge $5 to go see the parts for sale. What if some body in the area that has a Studebaker and needs a part? To me it would be like going to the Flaps and having to pay $5 to go in to get a part. What is next charging admission to see the Studebakers on display? Just to my way of thinking there is a little GREED going on. After Cedar Rapids ordeal I am starting to think I don't need International meets. And stick to local meets, vendors and May swap in South Bend. This has been bugging me for a while. Now I have it off my chest. Sorry

I'm surprised they don't charge every one comming to an event. I'm sure fair grounds are not donated to hold the event on. All auto events I go to seem to have fees to cover expenses.

Seems standard to pay to park as well to enter the meet.

It might be the fault of people like me that didnt register for the event. I dont like planning ahead being that things come up and plans get changed. I showed up at the gate Thursday morning to display my car, thinking that I may have to pay a fee, but I was told where to park the car and that was that. So, if it wasnt for them charging $5 for the inside swap, they wouldnt have collected any funds from me.

I think that charges for meets would be better accepted as long as the expenses are properly explained. Anyone who has participated in the planning, organizing, and conducting a meet event gains some insight and understanding regarding how much hard work is involved. At the Asheville meet, I overheard a man griping about how much he would have to pay to have his vehicle "Judged." So he just parked on the field without a judging card and griped to anyone who would listen. It reminded me of how naive I was in my younger days and what a cheap skate I was in my youth. I am still a cheap skate but now have an appreciation for the efforts for the host conducting these events. Extra effort should be made to keep the finances of the events transparent and properly explained. The events should also provide sufficient "value" to justify the charges.

I was up in Pigen Forge Tennessee about a month
ago. While I was having my 65th. Birthday dinner,at Krystal,A guy noticed my Studebaker cap and struck up a
conversation. It seems, there was a Volkswagon
show going on. I was invited to attend, at the
admission cost of $12.00. My wife told me to be
nice. SO, I didn't tell the guy what I thought
about a charge to attend the show, or that I
wouldn't give him TWELVE DOLLARS for his Volkswagon,
if I had to drive it. I will be attending a show
and swap meet in Lineville Alabama, next Sunday. I'll
pay to get in, won't like it, but, I will.

The Turkey Run car show in Daytona beach allows you to bring in passengers when you register your car....
I have always tried to snag a pedestrian on the way into the show grounds...
Have also cut off (Starsky and Hutch style) Studebakers that entered and were heading to the general parking area...
Had them follow me into the Stude club parking area...
Made several new friends that way....
              Hoping to go this year...

The local Pick'n'Pull yard here charges $1.00 admission to go into their year whether you buy something or not.

IIRC, the charge to attend the swap at Cedar Rapids was a function of the venue. Note that they did NOT charge for parking there. Registered members got in the building free.

You go to any stand-alone swap meet, and you can expect to pay admission, so if you go to the swap held in conjunction with an SDC meet, and aren't registered for the meet, you should expect to pay admission to the swap. The cost of the venue for the swap was paid up front by those people who registered, so why should anyone get a free ride on the backs of those who registered?

This is why I like the chicken bucket shows. They are free to the participants. The people who want to vote throw their money in the bucket as their vote. Usually you net more money than if you charge the participants a fee and since it's free you get more and better cars.

Is this five dollars every time or five dollars a day? I visit the swap meet 4 or 5 time a day just looking and sometimes buying. Sometimes I just like to look at the stuff I wish I could afford. Other times I like to just talk to the vendors when they are not busy. I like looking at the cars. I like talking to all of the people about their cars but I love the swap meets. I love rooting through all the dirty parts and all of the shiny parts. I may find just the part I need or want. The hunt is the best part. Every time I go through the parts I find something I had missed before. So If It is going to cost $5 for every looking trip it will limit my looking. I guess I will just do my looking out side.
Over the years I have been a vendor and if I was a vendor today I would be out side. You pay for your spot and then they limit the people coming in to see your stuff by charging to get in! Not good. It is hard enough in these times why would you try to squeeze a few more dollars out of people? Pay to shop that is just not right no matter how you justify it.

I have mixed feelings about charges for club functions, but.... the bills have to be paid. Charging to get on the grounds where the show is does not sound like a bad idea to help pay for the venue, but it would go down easier if it was applied to the registration fee and registered STUDEBAKERS have a pass to get the vehicle and its occupants in.
The swap meet is a different proposition. Its like that Pick'n'Pull example. I used to go to those places and just look around and I often bought something or went back later for something I saw. Now I don't go. I like to cruise the swap meet even when I am not looking for a particular part. Now I might not. Of course, I haven't had the time or money to attend an SDC International meet in years so maybe I am a bad example.

This was first I think at Cedar Rapids, how did it work out? When I go to a Zone or national meet I pay to be part of it as it is planned and think nothing nothing of it, at cedar Rapids I did not vend but did pay for 4 spaces so I could park my motor home close to the action, and my family would have a place to come to the swap and show and kick back if needed also it worked out very nice for any body else that wanted to stop by and talk or what ever even have a beer, water, or soda, it does get to me a little when people that are part of the club or are not part of it and use it for free when there is a cost and rules about being a member in good standings to be part of it. We have the best club with the best of most things for a small cost but still there is people that want every thing for free, Venders at all Studebaker meets by the rules are to be members of the club so the club insurance will cover the event, also members of chapters are supposed to be members of the national. Yet we still have people that just don't want to join to be part of it, we should have a way to let first time people see and try just to get their feet wet so to speak and see if they want to be part of it , also it is our job as members to help these people like what we have so we can get new people when ever we can not run them away..Bob

The host chapters should not be expected to lose money for the events. Somehow they have to recover the outlay ofr the event. Usualy through the registration fees. If you were registered for Ceder Rapids there was no charge to get into the swap meet building. Any body could do the outside area at no charge.

I forgot my badge the second day and paid to get in the building willingly. The host didn't forget my badge i did. Is all this bitterness worth $5 bucks.
It's a SDC event, they are enjoyable, for the attendee's and a lot of hard work for the host chapter. The work starts more than a year before the event. And is usualy done by a handfull of members who deserve more than this stuff for their efforts.

Give them some respect and lets stop whinning about trivial crap. $5.00 yesh you pay that for ten cents worth of popcorn at a movie. I'd say it's tie to move to the sunny side of the street on this subject.

I was a little surprised and disappointed myself. I didn't realize there was a charge until late but I had registered so I guess it was free. I do know that when I was a kid if they charged to get into the event after paying dues to the club, which is supposed to finance the national, I would have been very discouraged. Makes little difference to me now. I guess I can see both points but tend toward the "no charge".
