Can anyone tell me what vehicle this rearend is out of, and if it is a Dana 23 or 44? I know it is out of a Studebaker, it has tapered axles, the tag on the cover bolt reads 43-14 3:07 which I assume means it has a 3:07 gear ratio, and it measures approx. 51 3/4" from backing plate to backing plate. I'd like to get my facts straight before I give it away. Thanks, Junior.

There's raised numerals in the cast iron case if you'll look at it. On the back side - where the case has gussets that go out to where the axle tubes stick out. There you'll see 44, 23 or 27. There's a ratio tag visible under the head of one of the rear cover bolts.

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

The model number should be cast into the gusset just to the right of the bolt that is located about 2" to the right of the filler plug. You might have to clean that area with a wire brush to read it.

If it's a 3.07, it's very possibly a Model 27 axle, as that ratio was commonly used in Larks with automatics. I'm not certain if they offered 3.07s in Model 23 axles. The shape of the cover plate rules out a model 44.

I can see on my 19" monitor the number exactly where Gord said- it's a 27.

Both Bobs and Gord are right: 27 TT. If you put some paint stripper on the vertical metal tag at 3 o'clock, that should reveal the TT. My TT tag is pitted, I'd like a clean one. All that paint may have saved yours.

Thanks for the info. Now that I know where to look for the model number I will do that first thing Monday morning as the rearend is at the place I work. The tag at the 3 o'clock position reads the gear ratio, but I don't think it has a TT on it. Regardless of what it is, if anyone wants it, come and get it. Priced right...free. Junior.

The topic title to me sounded like the punch line to a joke so here it goes ....

The little tag on the right will not state TT but maybe 45 C or 45 B, some have a tag the is longer and held on with 2 bolts and it states about using the right oils, as far as all 307.1 being 27 I had a 63 Standard that came with a 307.1 44 rear end...Bob

                    I've got a 44 TT 3.07 that I took from under a '62 wagon years ago.
