Had a friend of mines wife call me today . She wants me to find an original set of seatbelts for her husband for Christmas . They should be a tan or brown and she wants original ones not the repop ones if she can find them . Now thats what i call a thoughtful wife I'll have to give my wife a list I guess !
Any help would be appreciated .

I would much rather have NEW seat belts than trust old, original stitching and web material from 50+ years ago.
The belts sold by the many Stude vendors listed in this forums index would be your best choice.

I agree with Jeff. Considering what we ask seat belts to do, I think safety equipment is one area where originality should step aside. I'm sure the wife's intentions are good, perhaps someone could suggest the safety factor to her. They do make repro pieces that would be hard to tell from the original.

Bob, what year car are we looking for? You know NOS are pretty tough belts to find and way overpriced due to demand, but the NOS buckles can be found with other colors and new webbing purchased and re-sewn. I've done a little research on these if you want to email me.

Does anyone produce new webbing that looks like the original? That's the first thing that jumps out at me when I see new seatbelts in an old car. LH

These guys do it, but it's $200-$400 a pair to restore belts, about half that just for new webbing.

Note that she wants "...seatbelts for her husband...", not for a Studebaker of any year. <G,G> Maybe she has a hard time keeping him in one place or she just keeps falling off his lap <G>.

I once complained that the Bell helmet the SCCA required (the only one that met Snell foundation specs) in 1971 was too expensive. A fellow racer asked me if I had a $35 dollar head or a $175 dollar head, you all know the answer to that....now having said that, get the "new" re-poped belts and anchors from one of the many vendors out there. They have them with chrome buckles that look period and meet todays specs!
