  • overdrive cost to buy & install

How much should I expect to pay for a good overdrive, & how much work & time to modify drive shaft on a '51 Studi bullet nose? I have an old 10" Logan lathe & full sized mil, etc

    Thanks, texastalking

Studi 85 hp 6 cyl; 2 door (is 4 door actually different re OD?) I could add, in case I put Camaro V6 160 hp: will drive train take extra hp if I don't floor it accelerating? Can I keep it calssic & avoid pollution junk from Camaro if all else is classic?

If you are planning to put in a Camaro V-6, why no go all the way and use the tranny, computer and harness.

It's not that bad a swap as you just need to power the harness with 12V, mount the motor and tranny and modify the driveshaft. The you can store the original for the next owner and drive the wheels of it.

Ask me how I know. Stinkin' restmods

The V-6 should fit well in that car.

The V6 would fit under the hood. Plenty of room.[8D] Problem is, I don't think any of the Stude trannies would fit. One would have to check the shaft length and etc on the transmission, to compare. The transmission you would have to use would be that of a V8 as the 6's transmission would be destroyed by that V6 (Wayyyyy too many horses involved[:0]). That said, I've no idea if the Camaro motor would be compatible with a Borg-Warner T96 transmission. It is a Chevy motor, which is a positive. Studebaker went with the Cleveland (Chevy) motors as they were compatible with the B.W. trannies, so I suppose that's in your favour.

          EDIT:
The transmission will cost you from fifty to around three hundred dollars. Once again, you have to keep in mind the compatibility issue. Then one has to deal with the lever, wiring harness, and switches for the O.D. solonoids, etc...

I put an OD transmission (swap for a three speed) in a '60 Lark, total cost, Transmission and installation, $500.

Let's clarify something up front. What you want is an OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION - not "just an overdrive". While you might be able to find and buy JUST the OD section of a T-96, installing it would be too much trouble. Easier and cheaper just to find the appropriate T96 that already has the OD on it.

If you didn't romp the car with that V6, the driveshaft and rear would hold up. But who want's to feather-foot around town all the time??? Find a Commander rear and you'll be good to go! Either way, you're gonna want BETTER BRAKES! There's kits to add discs up front OR you can get a 54 and later V8 drum brake setup off a donor Stude and have good and capable brakes that bolt right on to that '51.

              1953 Commander coupe
              1957 President two door

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I put a T96 OD in my 51 Champion (replaced the 3 speed without OD). Total cost including cost of trans, shipping from forum member across country, a few rebuild parts, OD cable/handle, and shorter front drive shaft (rebuilt and installed myself at no charge!): $260.

I got quite a bit of help from forum members regarding electrical hookups.
