Muffler Mouse Motel

I am working on a '52 Commander including all new brakes. I used 1200 to 2000 wet-dry sandpaper, then a cleaner with an air polisher and finally a wax to brighten the body color. The car had been stored 37 years. When I got it to fire for the first time out came the "motel" and a pile of rust all the way to the overhead door which was closed at the time......Brad

We once had gerbils (and other little creatures I'm sure) in our garage. They liked using mufflers to store food. One time after some storage I fired up the Parkview and had dogfood everywhere~ outta both pipes~ Good stuff it was- yup!!! [:0]

You'll always get weird looking stuff coming out the exhaust. Inside the muffler, there are a number of chemical combo's, commonly known as soot. Add a bit of condensating humidity and you'll have some corrosive acids. Once you start the car, the acids vaporise and leave by the tail pipe. On a daily driver, you therefore "clean" some of the gunk out each day.
A car parked for long periods of time will allow the acids to weaken the metal. The point of no return is usually not long before the tell-tale noise increase from a holed muffler.

Well, on itiitial start up, I'm gunning it a bit to clear her out, and out shoots a mouse nest out of the left exhaust, my family was just rolling with laughter seeing that happen. Fortunately it decided to build it's nest in there and no where else in the car!

When I used to live on a farm, mice would build a nest in the heater of my truck. I wouldn't notice it until winter came and I would turn the heater on. It was a quite an odor! [xx(]
