  • New forum member, first stude NOW WITH PICS

Being a newbie to the forum id like to say hi to all existing forumites.

We dont really see alot of studes over here in the UK, nevertheless I just bought my first, a '62 Hawk GT its going to be a project car as currently it has no engine, but i think ive located the original unit and will be going to see it next week. Its mainly bodywork the interior is nearly immaculate and it has all the trim pieces.

Im trying to find as much about it as possible is there any way i can find the history of the car, Ive emailed the studebaker museum and am awaiting a reply.

The only information i have to go on is the chassis number? and a plaque on the glove box saying the car was built for a wm j loyle/leyle i think

Anyone got any ideas? I hope someone can help out the newbie

You can order the production order for your car here:

It is 43 dollars American or 2 pounds Sterling

Is it RHD ? Not your car but there is an interesting thread on here about a RHD Hawk converted to propane one member owned.

Post if it is LHD and correctly spelled name from plaque and I will see if I can find anything.

Thanks for the fast reply, the car is LHD and the plaques difficult to read as its hand written, but etched into a metal plate thats why im unsure of the actual surname. I will try and remember to get a picture when im next at my workshop.

      thanks

Congrat's. on your find/purchase and welcome. Join the Studebaker Drivers Club (SDC), from this site.
Is your car an original export or European built car or one that is a latter transplant from the USA? Does it have chrome or painted side grille mouldings?
There is no one by either of those surnames in the current SDC Roster.

          I wonder if there's a chance it was originally a 6???

First, WELCOME! We have at least one forum member in the UK - Greg Diffen.

So, do you know if it sported a V8 or a 6 originally? Under the bonnet - next to the right hand hinge - there's an embossed metal tag affixed to the cowl. If it starts out "62V" it was a V8 car. "62S" would indicate a 6.

I assume by side grill mouldings you mean the pods where the bonnent pull is, these are painted, and the plate starts 62V, There is the owners manual with the car which also states a V8 the previous owner does have the V5 registration somewhere and is going to root it out for me sometime next week.

Ive had an email from greg and im sure ill be intouch when i get round to working on it

You describe a Hawk that was originally built for the domestic US market.

Keith.............Welcome to the site and the world of Studebakers. I bought my first one last summer and have learned a lot about it from the people here. Did you know that the 5 Studebaker brothers started building wagons (the kind pulled by horses) in 1852? Wikipedia has a lot of background on the company, as do a lot of other sites. Good luck getting your car on the road. Please post some pics ASAP....

Keith, it is good to have you part of the forum and also a fellow GT Hawk owner. Another common thread between us is that we are the owner of a 1967 Triumph TR4A we purchased new in September of 1966. A V8 in the UK has to be rare.

Welcome to the forum, if you have any questions about your Hawk, give me a shout. I've driven a 62 Hawk since I got my license in 1962. I've owned my present 62 Hawk since 1975 when I bought it from the original owner. They aren't all that hard to maintain as most parts for your car are still available. I would recommend obtaining a shop manual as the info contained in it makes it alot easier to do repairs. Bud

Welcome, Keith. My family were all originally from the UK. Good luck with your engine hunt. I have a low mileage '62 Hawk 289 engine in my Lark and will be selling it soon when my original engine gets rebuilt. Be glad to crate it up and ship it off to you. Greg should be able to explain where the engine number is to verify that engine year. We're curious about how your car looks. Post it soon.
