Scrapping a car

Having seen Gords thread on the Lark he just dragged home it raises a question I have had for a long time. After a car has been stripped of its usable/wanted parts how does one get rid off the remainder ?

Lets say I have one I drag home via tow dolly...I have all parts wanted...I guess now I call to see who wants it. I know that there are CL ads all the time for guys hauling for free so I am guessing I can take it somewhere for cash. What kind of prep do I need to do ? I want to say I have heard batteries out,gas tank dropped,no tires..but thats why I ask Since I need wheels and tires to get it there hopefully I can just pull them off there. If I want the rear axle I dont know if I can pull it and get it there sans axle or if I can drop it once there(having made it ready before)?

I guess another option is to chop it up and do it that way...that well might work also...but do I have to muck with non-metal removal ?

I know a trailer would make alot of this OBE, I dont have one and a tow dolly seems more likely at this point in time.

Is something paid or not because it is a rusty hulk...I ask as for backup I guess I could always get a "free haulaway" but kinda like to know they want it..maybe I can do it ahead.

There is a local car I am thinking of doing this with but it is so common and bereft of usable stuff I want to make sure I can break even.

One thing to keep in mind is that scrap metal dealers (and those guys that haul cars there for free), will NOT take the car without a title.

If you don't have a clear title for the car you want to scrap, you'll have to cut it up into little, unrecognizable pieces.

Pretty simple here.
I bought an 88 chev van. Removed engine, trans, dash, column, and about anything else I thought I might need. Called the local wrecking yard and told them the rest was free. No questions asked, they came and got it. Never asked for the title. I still have the title.
Maybe that's why he came after dark.....?

Wow... never heard of that. Must ne different elsewhere. Here they take one or 100; if you want to give the title they'll take it, but they don't care. Check with local scrapyards I guess; but it doesn't matter here.

What that means is you can make a pretty good living there with a tow truck. Just hook up to cars (anybody's cars), drag them to a scraper or wrecking yard and sell them. [^]

Been known to happen here in Louisa. An old junkyard was emptied here three years ago. Old stuff, as a 1941 Hudson pickup, 1948 Buick, 1957 Ford 2 dr. etc. Not one title in the bunch. Owner sold the mess at the right time and made $$.

I remember some years ago, a local car repair shop called in the crusher to clean out his back lot. As he finished, a neighbor across the street came over and asked him if he wanted a Pontiac Bonneville sitting in his back yard. Crusher man asked if he had a title, No. The guy's friend left it there because the tranny had given up the ghost. The car was really nice looking. The neighbor gave it to the shop owner on the spot, the shop owner shrugged his shoulders and the Pontiac went to the crusher. Shop owner made money from the heavy Pontiac, the neighbor got a car off his property, the crusher man filled out his load. Everyone happy- except the owner of the car, if he ever returned!!![}]

Just changed the rules here.Used to be able to haul in anything
but last week I pulled into the closest yard from where I picked
up the car and the manager said no title...no take it here.
My guess is that with scrap down and piles of stuff they havent
crushed they dont need more cars.My local guy took it as I'm a
regular customer.Car bodies are wayyyyyyyyyyyy down.

It has a title but I havent had probs without,tht I can ask about. This is kinda what I REALLY need to know if I dispose of it myself.

Don't forget that scrapyards may be busy the next few month because of the "clunker" bill...

I parted out a 67 Olds sedan for parts for my convertible - when I was done, it was just a body shell with glass and front suspension on four jack stands. I called one of those "donate your scrap car" programs (I think it was the kidney foundation) and they sent a ramp truck. We stacked a couple of old tires under the front, and he lifted the back so we could get the jack stands out, and he just hauled it up the ramp. I wouldn't advise this on a finished driveway, but I just kicked some gravel into the grooves left behind, and it was like the car was never there. At the time I was living in Manitoba, and they didn't even have titles, so that was no issue.
