Interesting that while the speedo is in km/h, the oil pressure gauge is still psi as opposed to kpa. [?]

Yep, its a '54 Champion cluster. Note the rounded "ear" on the left upper corner of the chrome. The '53 is flat there and the round ear part is a separate piece. They did the same thing with the chrome bar on the top of the glove box door, '53 has a separate little piece and '54 its part of the larger one. I can only suspect it was a attempt at labor cost reduction by reducing the number of separate pieces to assemble the dash. The other give-away is the panel around the gauges. The '53 is a very dark, almost black, green but the '54 is grey.

The speedo head doesn't have any numbers on its face (none of the gauges do), just those tick marks. The numbers are painted on a clear plastic lens panel in the assembly. I bet the speedo head is the same for kph or mph. You could swap out that plastic lens part with one marked in mph.

I wonder if SASCO has any of those 180 KPH speedos? I'd love to get one and recalibrate it to MPH[}] I had a complete NOS 55 Pres cluster akin to this that had a metric speedo in it. I traded it to Chuck Collins some time ago.

Edit: Well, they have the plastic face for the metric, but not the head.[V] I never thought about it, but the book doesn't show numbers for complete gage clusters like this one. Must be leftovers from production.[^]

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

Truly, the only difference is the lens over the speedometer and the odometer tumblers. This NOS cluster would appeal to anyone restoring a '54 Champion. Kilometrically impaired owners could just swap their existing lense and odometer tumblers.

The old, OLD, OLD Standard Surplus that was in business when Studebaker was in production, had tons of these metric (and "regular") clusters they sold for next to nothing for years.

1954 production was so disappointing, these clusters may have been one of the items for which they grossly over-ordered, and dumped a load of them on the non-affiliated (at the time) Standard Surplus.

Cousin George and I remember seeing many of these in the dusty Standard Surplus "showroom" (I use the term loosely) in the summers of 1961-1962-1963 while exploring South Bend. We always thought they were so cool, having those big numbers on the speedometer. (Yes, we understood they were metric; we weren't that naive!) BP

When I was at SASCO for the last international meet, I saw stacks of '54 Commander clusters. I don't know if they were metric or US.
