  • Vacuum control solenoid needed.

My '62 Champ pick-up, V-8, auto trans, need the transmission vacuum control solenoid replaced. Where can I locate one, part number 1690850? I have searched vendors and it is not stocked. What AMC part number may interchange?

Doug what he very cleverly "forgot" to mention, is it's for a 6 Cyl. It is also available at SASCO.

What would be the difference between the operation of the 6 cyl versus V8 solenoid units?

Well since all it does is control the throttle pressure and provide an electrical kick-down, it would have to have a different throttle pressure setting (maybe diaphragm spring tension) to match the Trans. shifts to the much lower power of the 6 cyl.

If I understand it right there are two functions of these units, one is an electrically activated downshift via the kick-down switch on the throttle control which would drop to a lower gear when you "floor it" such as in passing another vehicle. It is likely that this function would not change much between a 6 and 8. The other function is a vacuum activated up/down shift based on engine load/speed which would likely be different between a 6 and 8. Going on the assumption that the weaker 6 would require a downshift a little sooner and an upshift a little later would it be possible that the 6 unit would work adequately for the 8 with the understanding that it was going to act a little different than originally designed? As parts become scarce this option might be better than not driving the vehicle at all.

Thanks for the heads up Rich. I will continue to investigate. We have a transmission guy in the Chapter that should know.

For the record, that seller is actually SASCO.

rqa40 is not Dennis. IIRC, that is Bill Stroud in Berrien MI. I have purchased a lot of parts from him, even pre-eBay and pre-internet.
