1962 Studebaker Lark Question

Hello,
I am an auctioneer that is getting an estate ready with a Studebaker Lark to be sold. Problem is the car is from 1962 and has 4 doors. From what I am reading Studebaker didn't make a Lark with 4 doors until 1963. Owner's card reads 1962 and the VIN starts with 62. Please correct me if I am wrong...I have never dealt with a Studebaker so I am really in need of assistance.

Every year Larks were made there were 4-doors. These are not the most highly prized body type.

The body tag under the hood on the firewall passenger side will tell us all we need to know, other than the condition. Every once-in-a-while you run across a very rare four door sedan. Never expect it.

My first Studebaker was a '62 four door.

My first car was the first year of the Lark, 1959. Mine was a deluxe but they also offered a fancier model called the Regal. In 1961 a longer & even more deluxe model called the Cruiser was released. Which one you have Samantha would be shown as stated before by the body tag located under the hood on the passenger (right)side of the cowl. Four doors were pretty much the bread & butter of the line.

Thanks to all of you for your generous assistance! I will be back at the site on Friday and will look for the tag and take more photos to post here. The car is located in Kittanning, Pennsylvania, which is by Pittsburgh. The auction is July 11th.

To the idea of the Forum requiring SDC membership requirement before posting.....
We would have never known...first hand....that this car was getting ready to be sold.

Samantha, as others have stated, 59 was the first year for the larks, 4dr, included. If it happens to have a v-8 Studebakers own 259ci or 289 ci with A/C then it should bring a little more $$, 4 dr and 170ci inline 6 tend to bring the value down.

You mention 62 in the serial number. What follows next S or V?Just incase you didn't take a picture of the engine itself
Then again, overal condition is a big determining factor. (which I'm sure you know that...being involved with auctioneering.)

If I might be allowed to also respectfully point out, Studebakers generally don't bring the same value as, for instance, Chevys and Fords. They have a smaller following and it's generally unknown that they also have an excellent supply of parts. Just not at NAPA or the local corner parts house.

Hence, the reason we push membership in our club. It provides the membership with information and contacts for the maintenance and repair of their cars. Resources that aren't obvious to the outsider. Our newsletter is a glossy magazine of excellent quality and a copy of which wouldn't be remiss to include with the car.

Again...thank you all so much for this forum!

The letter after 62 is an S. This car is from the original owner, under 34,000 miles, garage kept, and appears to be all original and in terrific condition. I have sold classic cars in the past, and I realize that condition is quite subjective, but this car really looks good!

I will tell everyone that the last inspection sticker is from 1986. This was my client's car, and it had been her parents before that...and they all lived in the same home. I doubt that the car was driven much after her father died.

It's a bummer to see this is the Saturday just before our International Meet, which as you can see above is July 12-18. I'm leaving that Sunday afternoon towing a car, so it's not practical for me to make that special trip...

However, if the pictures can persuade me, I might make a (long) side trip...... I'll be watching! Show us the interior, engine, front fenders where they meet the doors, and at least a couple of the underside if possible. We'll take it from there!

Samantha, to add to what has been said. Check the body tag which is located on the passenger side firewall. It will read 62S-Y(some number). that number braks down like this 1=taxicab, 3=police car, 4=Deluxe, 6=Regal, 8=Cruiser. A deluxe is usually least appointed, rubber mats, single color steering wheel, rather plain door panels and seats. Regals have fancier interiors ie chrome trim on door panels, carpet and a two toned steering wheel. Crusiers have the fanciest interiors and the dash is faux wood grained also the rear doors will have vent windows. If you need more help the are lots of willing and able Studebaker people in the Pittsburgh area, for instance I am about 45 minutes to an hour south of Kittanning

The one thing that would make this a rare car is a sunroof. They look similar to the sunroof in the Volkswagen Beetle.
