  • Need diagram of '56 Golden Hawk exhaust system

I would like to have a diagram of the 56J exhaust system (in plan view). The Avanti Parts Catalog has a nice diagram of its exhaust system and I am hoping that one exists for the 56J. I have done all the research that I can think of and haven't found one. Thanks,

No, I didn't want to bother him. I looked through his 1956 GH Authenticity Guide, but had forgotten that I also have his 1956 GH Chassis & Body Parts Catalog. The diagram is in there.

Dwight, if the '56 parts manual diagram is not what you need, perhaps the Studebaker National Museum could provide a blueprint(s) of the exhaust system.

P.S. - still waiting to hear back from you about the R1 engine/transmission.

I am currently juggling the rebuild of my R3 engine and work on 2 other Studebakers (56J & '63 Avanti), so won't have time to work on the R1 engine for a while. But, I can't/won't sell it for a "rebuilder" or core price, so will need time to work on it to show that it is a good engine. Perhaps next year? I guess that is what is called a conundrum.

I understand that the Only difference in the exhaust system between a '56J and '56 Sky Hawk or any '56 to '64 C or K would be that the Left Head Pipe/Exhaust Pipe does not go Over the # 3 Crossmember, the correct crossmember has a dip up, so the pipe can go Under like the right side does.

Also, Only the 56J had a one piece Exhaust Pipe, instead of the front and rear exhaust pipe as all other V8's had.
The bends and angles are pretty clear here:

Thanks, Rich. As a long-time owner of 1962, 63, & 64 Hawks the exhaust system on the 1956s looks oddball to me. Only 4 pipes and 2 mufflers! Maybe there is a good reason that Studebaker split both the exhaust and tail pipes up for the later Hawks. Eight pipes & 2 mufflers seems better (except for the opportunity for leaks).

I have a Don Simmons SS exhaust system, but it is 2" and, with 374 c.i. and 2x4s, the car should have a 2.25" exhaust system. It might be easier to fish 2.25" pipes in if there were 8 pipes.

      Thanks, all.

There are only 6 Pipes on all V8 '56-'58, & Larks & Hawks except '56J, Avantis, Wagonaire's and Convertibles !
Front and Rear Exhaust and Tail on each side = 6, not 8.
    Working...
