Powdercoat on lockring

  • Powdercoat on lockring

    1949 2R10 getting wheels powdercoated. Concerned about damaging powdercoat prying lockring back on. Do you typically powder coat the lockring and just finess it back on, or not coat the lockring? TIA

    Paint would have been a better option, but you are down that road now, so too late.

      No, its not too late. I'm still taking tires off. I thought the concensus was powercoat was stronger, but if you think paint is better, why? With the prying needed to take those rings off, I just imagine putting them back on without damage will be challenging. Thats why I posted this. And yes, paint can be touched up

        Maybe not everyone's opinion, but in my experience powder coating tends to be more brittle, and susceptible to chips, cracking and pealing, not as flexible as paint.

        And as said, paint can be touched up when scuffed or scratched.

      You can usually just use some matching enamel to touch of powder coating chips if have too. But it much just be cheaper better to just paint the whole wheel with enamel and use the same paints to touch them up as needed. Just have them sandblast them for you to prep them and prime and paint them yourself.

        I ran into the same problem on my 1931 FSR, however it was with the chroming process. Having to fill in pits on the front side with copper made the film on the backside too thick to fit the wheels. I had to systematically grind off much of the chrome and copper on the backside to get each on to fit. I was just wondering if the powder coating could be just applied to the front? At any rate I don't think that I would coat the lock ring. I really don't know how you can alter the PC once it is applied. Just an opinion based on some presumptions, but really don't know.

          I recently had new tires/tubes mounted on M16 wheels, that uses the lock rings. I didn’t plan on painting or powder coating the wheels, but the lock rings were really beat up when I got them back from the tire shop. I then painted the lock rings which was fairly easy and made a big difference. I second the opinion to not powder coat the rings but rather use paint after you get the tires mounted.
