  • Stay away from Caramel Services

As some of you know I won the auction held by the Studebaker National Museum on 10/5 this year for the 62 Daytona convertible. It was on E-bay & Caramel Services was assigned to provide verification of both the seller (SNM) & myself (buyer). I have bought a couple of vehicles on Ebay through the years & have over 200 5 star ratings on my purchases. Today I got a call from Andrew Beckman of the museum asking me to call
Caramel & verify I had received both the title & vehicle so they would release the funds they were holding to pay the museum! The day I won the auction I verified my I.D. on their (Caramel) system with my drivers license & whatever requested at that time. The next 3 days was hell. They asked the museum staff for all kinds of proof including the articles of incorporation & that they are a non-profit! Who knows what else they demanded but the whole thing was ulcer, gut wrenching excess, asking me for proof again & then stating my I.D. could not be verified, even after scanning my drivers license & everything else short of a blood donation. I hope anyone here that may be thinking of selling their vehicle on Ebay make sure you have the option of not having Caramel involved. Today I got a call from Andrew asking me to call Caramel & tell them I have the car & title. They hadn't released my payment until I did! If that is not an option, sell it another way, unless your into some sort of abuse! These people are so inept they need instructions on which side grass is cut!

On the bright side dealing with Patrick at the museum was great. He called & (finally, after Caramel's greif was satisfied) said he was sending the title. It arrived the following day! He then called back the following friday (10/10) & told me the car had just been picked up by the transporter that afternoon. It arrived at y driveway that sunday night at 7:15! Just in time for me to do a little things & show it at the local car show last saturday. The car runs strong & I am more than pleased with it!

I sold a 62 Lark sedan for a friend on Bring A Trailer earlier this year and the buyer opted to use Caramel to "broker" the money and paperwork transaction. It's a service that BAT offers the buyer and as the seller, I didn't have any choice but to go along with it.

It was an absolute nightmare. Caramel added a lot of complications and created tension between the buyer and myself, and dragged the whole thing out a lot longer than it would've taken had the buyer dealt with me directly.

Wow Warren, I must be living in the Dark Ages !

NOW eBay uses some kind of "verification Co." to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt WHO the parties are, and just like PayPal; they hold the Money earning interest, and the Title until THEY feel like the Buyer and Seller have jumped through enough Hoops & should get them !

I have been under my Rock too long I guess, Never heard of THIS !

Time to forget eBay and use Bring a Trailer I guess.

Buyers and/or sellers have always been able to use an escrow service for car buy/sell transactions. eBay and BaT have made it easier to use an escrow service by incorporating their chosen escrow service into the transaction if requested. It is still optional and only used if requested by the buyer or seller. An escrow service other than the one that eBay or BaT has selected can still be used. The buyer/seller is not required to use eBay's or BaT's service.

Buying a car long distance can rightfully make a buyer and/or seller nervous. An escrow service makes good sense in many cases and can be required in some cases. For example, the museum may require such a service when they sell a car through eBay to insure they are not putting museum assets at risk of a scam.
