Does anyone know what happened to all the parts that Stu-V back in the day sold I am looking through one of his catalogs from the mid 70's

  • #2
It is a very good question as I have the entire R4 dual carb, intake, linkage, air cleaner etc. on my R4 Clone '63 GT Hawk. I often wondered how they obtained the correct number Carter carburetors as surely there couldn't have been very many of them. I believe if my memory serves me correctly, I dealt with someone named Chris Banke at Stu-V.

The list is short, but rich with history; those who tried to make money selling Studebaker performance parts. Like most others, the Stu-V owners suffered dashed hopes, lost money, split up the inventory and went on to other things.

I would not recommend ordering anything from that Catalog ! Loooooooooooog Gone as you know !
And as Jack said, all broken up to other Vendors, Jon Myer might have a few pieces, but most have gone on cars by now.

Rich you seem to continually have a problem when honest questions are proffered to those on this forum??????????
I "assumed " this site exists for the sole purpose of disseminating information relative to Studebaker and Packard vehicles?

I had the same set up on the Kart Hauler (without the beautiful and rare matching air cleaner assembly). It ran great!

A true beauty in every way. The owner should be very proud.

If you are referring to Dick's "Cart Hauler", I am sure the buyer WAS very happy, until it was destroyed. Frown

Part of the story of STU-V was that when the gas crises hit in 1973, a lot of the customers were suddenly not interested in performance products. We also didn't understand the CASCO aspect of the Studebaker owners.

              David,
Do I read correctly that you were involved in Stu-V? I also don't understand Rich's comment about the hauler being destroyed. Perhaps you could enlighten those of us who are in the dark.
              Cheers,

I wasn't aware of the Cart Hauler being destroyed either. That was some sad news. So I googled it and came up with this.

Looks like it was destroyed in a wildfire in SoCal back in 2018.

Very sad to hear. That was a beautiful car and I know Dick put his heart into it, not to mention a lot of time and money. I went to the GNRS that year and saw it in person on display. It was gorgeous and spotless. What a shame. I assume and hope this is not the first time Dick is also finding out about it since it's been several years ago at this point.

It was posted here from when the wildfire first occurred in 2018: Famous Kart Hauler lost to Malibu Fires - Studebaker Drivers Club Forum

                  It is an unfortunate loss.

Thanks for posting that Craig, that brings back a lot of forgotten memories not only of that car we all knew, but about the History of it after Dick sold it that I never knew, or have forgotten. A post started by none other than the famous RIP Bob Palma.

Yes I was involved Stu-V. We were not involved in the hauler, that had nothing to do with Stu-V.

For true; but that was then and this is now. Most of the hard-core CASOs have aged out and today, there are more beautiful high-dollar Studebaker builds than ever.

Now, we turn away more engine building business than ever; we're always six months to a year on any new projects.

For what it's worth I understand the late John Erb got a lot of Stu-V patterns/molds
Also back in the '80's I bought a set of R3 headers from the late Lionel Stone and they had "STU-V" cast into them.
I suspect Jon Myers has some of that stuff now.
