Has anyone else ever noticed that after Mr Egbert took over, Studebakers got roomier so that a guy over 5' 8" tall could sit in one reasonably comfortably? You don't see him in one unless the top is down.

The production Avanti 'A'-pillar at the windshield was redesigned with less of a rake. Reportedly, Sherwood Egbert banged his head on the windshield post of an early mockup trying to sit inside it.Originally posted by Jeffry Cassel View PostHas anyone else ever noticed that after Mr Egbert took over, Studebakers got roomier so that a guy over 5' 8" tall could sit in one reasonably comfortably? I chuckled at the attempt at disparagingly referred to those who compared the Avanti to the overseas competition as "Euro worshipers." I can only speak for myself but the name just doesn't fit. We currently own 16 Studebakers including an Avanti, 2 Buicks, 1 Chevrolet, 2 Lincolns, 3 Jeeps and 4 Fords. Yes we do own 3 Jaguars, but that doesn't make me a "Euro worshiper."
Since more then half of the best that Europe cars that I mentioned were shipped to the US I don't think that it was improper to compare them to the American competition. In 1968 I made a personals car choice that will haunt me forever. I chose a 1964 Avanti over an XKE drop head. It's not that the Avanti was that bad it's just that in this case the competition was so much better.

You miss the entire point of what I wrote.
Typical.
I wasn't the one to compare the Avanti to Jags and 911 's or even Corvettes.
I'm sorry your choice of an Avanti has haunted you.
I don't dispute the greatness of the Jaguars. Studebaker even used their front brakes. (Though many experts on the forum disparage them)
But don't compare apples to oranges.
Studebaker: six months to crash develop an advanced automobile in styling and concept to draw attention to the marque using many off the shelf components due to time and financial constraints. All the so much better competition had decades and experienced racing engineers.
Jaguar: decades of racing victories and sports car development in an atmosphere of competition and tight twisting European roads. An entirely different climate than South Bend Indiana.
I don't believe Studebaker marketed the Avanti as a sports car. It was more of a Grand touring design for high speed touring with multiple passengers.
No matter what it was a great car, an incredible accomplishment that lives on today in spite of all the BS of the experts.
Sorry you have to apologize for owning one.

The Avanti was a gussied up Lark which was a gussied up early ‘50s cheap family car.Last edited by 64V19816; Yesterday, 11:27 AM.

My Avanti was far better than having sex, sex is a momentary situation, with the Avanti the "thrill" continues for all of ones time on this spinning orb, that's my opinion and I am sticking with it.:-)

I've always admired Avanti, and have long wanted one, but your description seems a bit of a stretch. Are you sure you ain't been smoking some of them left handed cigarettes?
