  • Winter again

Took the old Hawk for quick 30 mile run yesterday to stir up the oils before storage and right on time this morning woke up to snow on the ground and 25 degrees on the thermometer. It was the only time I drove it this year as it seemed I just never got around to "unpacking" it from last winter. Tried to rehome the old girl but no takers with any money. Usual tire kickers and speculators with ridiculous offers still around in abundance. Still get the usual "let me take it for a spin" crowd and had one that wanted me to let him take it for the weekend to neighboring town to show his ex wife who apparently still controlled his life. Takes all kinds I guess and I just tell them I am old but not stupid. On another quick note I see this is my 1000th post on this forum and I have thoroughly enjoyed the really helpful folks on here courteous enough to reply to some of my inane questions and remarks. Thanks a lot.

Earle, I looked back on this forum at all your "started" posts back to 2000 but didn't see a post about a Stude for sale. Can you share the post or ad about this Hawk?

Yes, usually I like the auto-correct, but sometimes it corrects to a silly word!

I didn't formally put an ad on this forum Paul but mentioned that it was for sale in many of my comments especially regarding the heavy lift of the hood and my 91 years of age preventing me from lifting it anymore. I have advertised it locally and on a couple of the Facebook forums. Although I know the real market is probably on the east side of the Mississippi but shipping is getting so out of sight that I have tried to concentrate on nearby states where a potential buyer could probably drive it home. I may have to consider sharing some of the shipping cost but right now I'm trying the local market.

Understand Earle. You never know when a buyer will pop up.

Wow winter so soon! Here in Eastern Washington it’s definitely turning cool, but rain, not snow…yet!

Don't remind me ! I grew up in 70F Degree Southern Calif.
Living here in the Pacific Northwest, Western Washington is not what most people call really COLD, but to Me the Humidity Plus the cold, Plus the Wind, sometimes down to only about 18F + = COLD !
I am just not adjusting well to it even after 25 years.

I agree Rich, which is why we head to Arizona once it decides to stick and stay white (Snowed last night). I simply do not want to move snow as my daily activity although I do have the equipment if necessary. Matthew in Florida probably has the best idea, but he does have to deal with hurricanes.

Bill, I thought you enjoyed moving snow with that big Studebaker deuce and a half of yours.

Yes Eddie, the US6 is for when we get hit hard like a few years ago. I use a Jeep with a plow for the less severe dumps.
I still prefer to hear about it on the news when we are in Arizona.

E.Davis, this is so well written that I am plagiarizing your work. Unfortunately, I suspect this will be the case for me when I try to re-home several of my Studebakers. Most of us are ageing out of the hobby, or soon will. I am racing against the clock to get them ready to sell.

I learned long ago not to let someone I didn't know take my car for a spin alone.

For sure Dwight. I have the valid excuse that my insurance won't allow any drivers other than my wife and myself to drive it. They won't pay if an accident occurs and one of us isn't behind the wheel. I am always glad to take legit lookers for a ride and explain all the workings of a classic car though. After the demo ride I have never had anyone insist on driving it or feel that it had influenced their decision to buy or not.

                Rich,
C'mon man. Winter? That's why I moved from MN 47 years ago because Winter is a lesson for slow learners. Humid? -Yes. Cold? -Sometimes. Wind? -Who doesn't have wind. I agree it's not AZ, but that's okay because I can't stand the heat. I view the weather in the PNW as being as close to perfect as one can get. It may not be for everyone, but I consider it paradise.

I grew up in New Jersey with hurricanes. One storm as I sat in english class, looking out the window & seeing the screen for a portion of the Woodbridge Drive-In blow apart. Walking home that day I had to bend forward almost 45 degrees to counter the wind. So I moved to So Cal & dealt with earthquakes. Now I'm in Northern Arizona & only deal with light snow in winter. It's hitting in the mid 30's before daybreak. I'll suffer..........NOT!

My big thing this time of year is getting everything where I want it because in a couple months there may be 3 feet of snow up against the garage doors which would be frozen to the ground making car re-location problematic if not impossible. Farmer's Almanac predicts a mild, open winter---but aren't they always wrong?

Besides the cold and wind just sucking basically, the worst part about places where it snows is the salt on the roads. Not a good combo with old cars of any make. So no thanks.

Here is a vid that I made today . So , Windy , Humid ( Temp. 80 Humidity 81% ) , and tiny , but all pervasive little bits of sand in the air as well !!
It is refreshing , in a Sea Coast way . This is directly east of my house , just across the ICW . We'll get some 50's later this week . , and this is way better than the
                          full blown Summer .

Looks like there is always something to clean up where ever you go. We have an endless falling and blowing of leaves and you have sea weed. Better than shoveling 3 feet of snow in sub zero temps though.
