  • Found another butchered Hawk, 1964 this time, lots of custom touches!

    Greetings!
Brought home another Hawk this week, a 1964 4 speed car with no engine, lots of good parts and lots of "custom" touches, like armor clad BX wiring, roof flashing screwed to the sides of the car and trunk as decorative trim, bottoms of the doors and trunk lid taped up with metal tape, etc. source of lots of laughter all around. Poster child on why to never buy a car by pictures alone, it actually doesn't look terrible in the pictures!
Anyway I bought it for a few things for the 1957 Golden Hawk and the 1961 Hawk, but I have some questions for the guys who know.
This car has obviously been thrown together at some point by someone who may have been a small job handyman based on the wiring and woodwork on the dash, but what is strange is this car has one fiberglass fender and one fiberglass quarter panel. (They put the roof flashing on both, even though the glass fender didn't have rust LOL). I have read that the aftermarket made fiberglass fenders, but did they make fiberglass quarters as well? I will be taking it all off to sell in the future, but was surprised to find it.
Engine was taken by the previous owner to fix another Hawk, so I got it as a roller with the 4 speed setup still there, a 4 wheel disc conversion kit installed, and I think a 4bbl intake (have to confirm, has an adapter on it to go to a Holley square bore carb) along with a lot of other parts so it was a good buy as a donor.
One more question, car has a gold hawk painted under the hood, is that factory? Also has no front bumper and some kind of valence down low, maybe in place of the bumper?
Almost forgot! The glove box has a tag that says the Hawk was specially made for someone, is that a factory thing or just some JC Whitney deal?

Can't see most of what you mentioned in the pic. Just looks like the front bumper is missing, there is supposed to be a valance under the bumper, at least there is thru 1962, I've never looked at a '63-'64 close enough to notice. The grill "screen" is wrong for a '64. The tag on the glove box is common, I'm not sure if the dealers installed them or the factory but they are Studebaker. My '62 GT has one too. From the pic it doesn't look too bad, except for the ugly 1980s-90s wheels.

I can get some more pics in a few days, will be at Hershey parts shopping tomorrow and Thursday. Front valence is black, probably fiberglass, and maybe it is just missing the bumper. Is that a 62 or a 63 grille? This car was obviously pieced together so the wrong grille is not a surprise. That silver trim all along the bottom of the car is roof flashing screwed right into the car LOL.

It 's a '62 grill screen. The '63 and '64 screens are the same but they're "highlighted" differently. I don't like the '62 screen, so I have the '63-'64 screen on my '62, even have the '64 hood ornament and all chrome tail light housings.

LOL ! There were No Gold Hawks painted on the underside of the Hoods.

It appears that they also painted the standup Hood Ornament Gold !
The grille mesh is from a '62 Hawk, the Grill Moulding may be the rarer '64 one without the embossed Hawk "Bird" where the Ornament sits.

The Intake Manifold that came with it, may be from the '62 the grille came from, it would be the square bore for the small Carter WCFB, not the '63/'64 large secondary intake for the AFB that fits new Edelbrocks.

The owner Dash Plaques were Dealer or Owner applied, but ordered from the Factory after they were notified Who the new original owner was.

What are those Two Blobs over the front fender Air Vent Door ?

It is probably good that there is no engine; when a car gets really cobbled up - like this - you cannot trust anything to be OK. It is a lot of work to go through system by system to undo the "custom" features. (and blacked out the side grills by the turn signals) The specilly built for tag was put on special orders in 64 and I believe 63 too. sorta cool if it is the original owner

I still have one of the original engraved Plaques in the small brown envelope that came from South Bend instructing the Dealer to install it, or mail it to the owner of a normal in stock, "Limited Edition" 4 Speed '61 Hawk.

My 64 was 2 cars; a rusted out Missouri car that provided interior and mechanical parts and a rust free Texas rolling body and frame. It is one great car now! Years ago someone was selling those 'specially made' plaques. Have not seen a ad for one in many years tho. Do you have a 61 4 spd Hawk? Cool.

Too bad on the gold Hawk under the hood, I was hoping that was factory 🤣
Those blobs on the fenders are JC Whitney style stick on air vents, only the best for this car.
I need to find a blank glove box tag and get it engraved for me!

Yes I have a 61 4 speed Hawk, it was apart for 30 years and moved between a couple locations, I dragged it out of the guys basement. The build will be on my YouTube channel, Rust Hoarders Garage.

I just saw a week or so ago serial number tags being offered with your # engraved. The ebay ad showed the Stude-Packard tag & the later Stude Corp. As a side note I see that Studebaker International is offering the decal ($6.00 each) to freshen up those that are chipped up or just the stainless spot welded on the A pillar.

Those serial number tags on ebay are aluminum, not the stainless steel as used on our Studebakers.

My last one was a 64 Hawk. And then it was a 57 Clipper. And then it was a 56 Packard 400. Thing is, they just cry out to you to be saved!! How can a person allow an innocent ,forlorn ,rare, and pretty car to be turned into soup cans? (My 58 Packard's serial no. tag had fallen off somewhere and last month had a new one made with the serial no. supplied by the Studebaker National Museum and a decal from SI. Cost was about $30, but it is a ss tag just like original but a little heavier metal.

This 64 is not worth restoring, the roof is rotted out alone with a lot of the panels. Great parts car though!
Also to be clear I am not looking for a serial number tag, all of my cars have them. I wanted a blank tag that goes on the glove box like the 64 has that says "this car made for " with the original owners name on it.

For now the 64 sits until parts start getting pulled for the 57 Golden Hawk and I am back on my 1961 Rambler wagon build.
