  • Fred Fox '61 Lark Part III Article in Oct. Turning Wheels

    We got our Oct. issues of Turning Wheels today and I was reading the Fred Fox article Issue # 3 of the '61 Lark Series.
    I was shocked to read that the original article editor Tom and Both Fred and the Stude. National Museum Curator Andy Beckman missed the "Whole Story" on the rarely found '61 Lark Regal 4 Door Sedan "C" Pillar Emblem.

    Andy said Quote; "It was used on Non-Cruiser Sedans"

    Since I always happened to really Like those rare emblems only used on '61 Lark Regal Sedans, I bought a few NOS ones like this one, I always thought they missed the boat by not putting them on '61 Cruisers like mine.

    So of course I knew that Andy was only partially correct, they were only on non-Cruiser Sedans, but to complete the whole true story, they were ONLY used on Regal Sedans.

    IMHO, Probably the main reason these are so rare is, in 1961 the better 4 door Model W6 Regal models as well as the P6 Regal Wagons were a very poor seller.
    The same thing happened in '62, on the Y6 (now a long wheelbase 4 door sedan) Regal, and the Regal P6 Wagon.

    And I always attributed that to the almost impossible to notice, Visual outside look, the ONLY better looking difference noticeable for your money if you were looking closely, was the Standard 4 Head Lights which also was available as an option on the Deluxe Model, the Drip Rail stainless moulding and the aforementioned Emblems !

    StudeRich - Your comments made me wonder how this item was addressed in the parts catalog for 1959-1964, so I did some checking. Here is what I found, with the :

    Illust, ..... Part ......................DESCRIPTION ........................................................ Per CAR
    Number Number ................................................................................ ...................... 4 dr 2 dr

    2104-9 1338901 ... EMBLEM, roof side extension W6-F6 61S, 61V ..... 2 ... 2

    W = SEDAN (4 Door), W6 = Regal
    F = SEDAN (2 Door), F6 = Custom (But only for 63S, 63V (not 61S, 61V))

    As I found when writing the 56J Parts Catalog using information from the 53-58 catalogs, things could get confusing. I'm not sure why "F6" was listed along with "W6" when the description clearly indicates that this emblem was used on 61S and 61V models. The only "F6" model was for 1963-64 and Part Number 1338901 is not listed for that model. The only Regal sedan for 63-64 was an F4, 2 door model. Maybe I'm missing something, but that's the way I see it.

    Confusion aside, I think this supports what you stated. Good catch!!!

    PS - Fred & Andy do fantastic work, and certainly know a lot more than I do. It will be interesting to see if any more discussion on this, takes place in future TW issues.

      Thank you Frank, you read it correctly concerning the subject, the Emblem as I did, and it is clearly an error or Typo that does not effect the true reality ...the Emblem was only used on W6 Regal 4 Door Sedan '61 Larks.

      Minor corrections:
      1. the F4 "Regal" 2 Door Sedan was only used in '63 not '64. It was a Mid-level trim in '63.
      The 1964 F4 was a "Commander" 2 Door Sedan, also a Mid-level trim 2 Door Sedan.

      2. The F6 was only used to refer to the 1963 "Custom" 2 Door Sedan, the first and only '59-'64 Top level 2 Door Sedan, not a '64.
