  • Very nice cars, nicely presented, impressive prices

Joe Aluise always had a tendency to over-restore some of his cars, though they WERE impressive. Looks like he's gone into the classic car business. His ad in Hemmings claims 450 hp for the Avanti R3.

Maybe Studebakers will follow the prices of houses these days.

How thankful I am I bought my house and my Studebakers decades ago!!

All the Avanti's don't appear to be R3's. The air cleaners are R2 style and I don't see the fifth breather. At these prices I would feel pretty burned if I bought one and found out afterwards it wasn't a true R3 car.

There were only nine original R3 Avantis built at South Bend. The serial numbers of all of them are known & published. All were 1964s.

There are a number of 1963-4 Avantis which have had an R3 engine installed in them, either by the Granatellis or by owners. The issue with them is ensuring that it is an actual R3 engine because many like to put an R3 carb enclosure on their R2 so it "looks cool." I once had a fellow try to buy the carb enclosure off my R3.

Just having an R2 air cleaner doesn't mean that the engine is not a real R3 engine.

Also, not having a fifth breather cap doesn't mean anything either. Some R3s had a PCV, thus no fifth breather.

The first clue to look at is the cylinder heads. If the so-called "R3" engine has 479 heads then that is an essential element of an R3. And, those are very rare. There are many more details, but I'll quit here.

To those who are fortunate enough to own one of the 9 original R3 Avantis, I say more (horse) power to you. The rest of us will just have to be satisfied with only an R3 engine.

I was basing it by what I could see in the pictures. I was assuming the engine was one of the R3
's that Paxton sold. Did not realize that the air cleaner and fifth breather were not always used. Good to know.

Aside from the authenticity of the claims on his site I am pleasantly surprised at all of the Studebakers listed on the site. It means our cars are starting to get recognition.

I saw the undercarriage of that Tangerine and Snowcap '56J with the Dual Quads, 335 HP, 3 speed O.D. and claimed "only one built with A/C", and had to laugh at those Rusty exhaust pipes on a $300,000.00 Hawk !

If you had the Body off, WHY would you not replace, paint or buy Stainless Steel replacements if you are investing several 20's of Thousands of dollars in a full restoration !

That should knock at least $100,000 off the price.

I'm more wondering what those chains are for.
