  • My High School 56J, in 1968-1970

This is the only known pic of my first car, a 56J in high school, 1968-1970. Back then, it was popular to remove the hubcaps and paint the wheels black. I also installed extra long rear spring shackles, which were popular back then. Ditto for the corkscrew style spacers in the front coil springs. I do not see a passenger side windshield wiper; just a guess but, if I only had one wiper I put it on the driver side. It had a floor shift 3spd/OD, but was originally an Ultramatic, and a PO cut the column shift lever off to a 2-3" nub, then stuck the plastic shift knob back onto that nub. It had PACKARD script valve covers, so was likely a 55 or 56 Packard replacement engine, 352 or 374. It also had power steering. I recall the rear seat arm rest was stuck in the up position, and back then I did not know about the hidden release lever, to lower it. So if 3-4 passengers were in the back seat (not uncommon), someone had to sit on top of that raised armrest. LOL. The rear seat was also a no-go for "making out", but the front bench seat worked well, though I recall a young lady's hair once getting tangled hopelessly in the door window crank knob.

I recall the headlights sometimes went off at night, and the first time was a hair raising experience. They'd usually come back on in a few seconds, and I eventually discovered they only went off when hi-beams were on, so kept them mostly on dim. Back then the car was only 12-16 years old, so Studebaker's infamous headlight blackout problem, many of us have experienced, has been around a looong time.

Lotsa memories of that old 56J, and I consider myself VERY fortunate to have had it as my first car. It began a 56J love affair that remains today, and my blue & white 56J is within sight as I type this. Click image for larger version Name:	Joe's 56J 1969.jpg Views:	0 Size:	67.2 KB ID:	2058884

    Nice to read!

In my youth I discovered on my early 60's MoPars that replacing original head light bulbs with H4 the lights would cut out when they had been on a while.

I had a 51 Lincoln with the same headlight problem. Nobody could ever find the problem or fix it. Changed relays and headlight sealed beam units and the dimmer switch to no avail. Even tried a new headlight switch.

I only dreamed about the 56J in high school {class of 59}. also dreamed of a 56 Mercery drop top. Did have a 52 Commander 4 door in 1959.

You didn't mention the stripe at the bottom of the door?

That would be the Stock Aluminum "Rocker Panel Moulding" that was actually on the Door.

I, too, had a '56 Golden Hawk (as I knew them then) in high school, a Mocha & Snowcap one with Ultramatic. Like Joe that's probably the reason that I currently have two 56Js. I am currently trying to get them back on the road (along with a '63 Avanti).

I remember the day the love affair began, like yesterday. I was nearing 16, so dad and I had been looking at local cars for sale. I'd seen at at least a dozen and nothing tickled my fancy. Then one day we stopped at a used car lot where the black 56J sat in the second row. Walking up, still 50-100 feet away, I instantly knew it was the "my car". I knew nothing about Studes, and certainly nothing about Golden Hawks, but it was love at first sight. Then, looking through the windows at the interior and dash, I was beside myself with excitement. My dad knew the owner very well, dad lent me the sales price of $250, and the rest is history. Hard to know, but I probably drove that car at least 10,000 in high school, and have since driven half dozen other 56Js, collectively, over 250,000 miles. Have owned at least a dozen of them, including parts cars; restored a few, and sold a few restorable ones to others. Have rebuilt eight 352s, including a re-rebuild of one, after 100,000 miles on the first rebuild. Also rebuilt an Ultramatic transmission successfully, which is saying something, LOL. Yep, 56Js have always been a big part of my life, but it began with the black one above.

My first car was also 250.00. It was a 64 Cruiser, my first car, probably in 1969.

I’ve never owned one…….yet, but came close a few times. The first one I really looked at was owned by a cop in Sharonville, Ohio. It was later sold to an old friend, Lloyd Martin. Lloyd offered it to me for $750 but it wasn’t in the cards at the time. I had talked to the cop when he owned it. He left his garage door up and I saw it so stopped to talk. This one had a 374, dual quad, three speed and od. Probably had the cam kit, I can’t say, but he may have mentioned that. It was an unbelievably nice car as it had been off the road for years, stored in his garage and the year I saw it was 1967 or 68. We all need access to a time machine accompanied by a huge wallet.

I managed to click out before I wrote it all:
In -77 when I was 17 years "old" (& had 5 other cars) a friend says "I know where a Studebaker is standing" (cuz like everybody else he knew I loved them) & of we went & looked at it... I didn't have camera but he did & I still have the photos of it. I found the owner but the price he asked was like the price of a -59 Eldorado Biarritz convertible, so a big NO for me...
In the 90's I found out that the owner was a well known Studebaker guy & that it was a pretty hot car, still with the Packard engine but not original.
If anyone is interested I'll find & show the pix, otherwise not.

Sure, it's always nice to see pics of 56Js, in any state or condition.

Never had the desire to own one, because of the Packardbaker Engine ! LOL !
I prefer the rarer '56 Sky Hawk.

Absolutely right, StudeRich! The only thing I hated more that the Packard V8 and the 56J styling was the car's propensity to attract young women. It was just awful, and my wife agreed!

Yeah, the owner of this '54 Commander Starliner had the same problem:

A good friend has a 56J with OD in his barn. He will sell but his price $10,000.00 is beyond me. Car is in the South Bend area. Also a 57 Golden Hawk beside it. The 57 is a driver as I rebuilt the brakes a couple years ago.

That poor Commander owner. Talk about bold, one of them even got behind the wheel. Fortunately, that never happened to me!
Joe H, with all the Studebaker driving you've done, your must have had thousands of nightmares like this.
