Are there any members here that purchased Studebaker Avantis brand new and still have them??

  • #2
There can't be many. I looked at a White 63 in 63 at Keys motors in North Hollywood. The sticker in the window was $5,500. I told the sales man I could buy a new Cadillac for less than $5,000 and walked out. I am 81. Bought a used one in 69 for $225, then another in 2018 for $8,000.

…and speaking of plastic cars, I go to church with a guy who’s still the original owner of his ‘57 Vette. 😉

Alan I am almost there, as I purchased my '64 Avanti in December of 1967, the original owner purchased the car in November of 1964, and it had apx 32k miles on her.

I about mimic your own purchase-I am 81 and bought my 1964, 30K miles, in 1967. But then I have never bought a new car in my life nor do I intend to.

Was it put in your mother's name (Ida) at the time you purchased it? Did you then reside at 8809 3rd Ave in North Bergen?

So your saying the new one would have been a good investment?

No, the good investment would have been a 56 Ferrari Testa Rosa GT 350 for $5,000 that was for sale at a Brokers Show room in 1965.

Another true story, in 1968 I was in Miami. Florida attending college and the Avanti was my "daily driver".......one occasion on the way to my then girlfriends house I stopped at a local convenience store, I think it was "U-Totum" ........while I was inside an older fellow approached me and asked if that Avanti was mine, I said yes, and he then asked if I would be interested in purchasing his "car"..........long story short, the "car" was ( I think) a 1964 two door blue Maserati, and he said I could take it for a "spin" (lol with he in the pass seat) he was an Eastern Airlines pilot and said the car needed all new fuel injectors and he just wanted to sell...........price $5,500. I did take the car up on I-495 and drove for maybe one mile then turned around. I called my dad and told him the story, as the car was "only" $5,500..........dad just said I should just concentrate on my school studies and forget any more cars.best suited to rich people:-)

Wow, saw my first Avanti at Coffman Studebaker in Columbus, Ohio, 1963. I was 12. My heart literally beat faster.
Saw lots of Cadillacs around, new and used.
Never gave them a second look
Have two Avantis now. Sometimes I pull one out of the garage so I can just look at it in my driveway.
Had a '48 Cadillac sedan many years ago, got it on a multiple car trade. Never really looked at it....

Hawk, just looking at the car is "cosmic" as Tom Kellogg used to quip. Speed is a non issue for me she could have a 4 cyl in her, its the gestalt of the car, the visceral reaction one receives from just looking at it. Admittedly I love the '63-67 Corvettes, but they never elicit the same reactions from folks as the Avanti does..............and yes, WOMEN are the most outspoken as to how beautiful the car is.

Intimacy with women come and go, but the thrill and gestalt of the Avanti is endless;-)

Maybe not the worst investment that I ever made, but when compared to the 1967 Jaguar XKE Drophead that I was considering, it sure could have been better!

When they came out I believed they were from outer space, still do, and hard to believe, when they were new I only saw four Avantis on the streets, that is it, so even when new they were rare as hens teeth.

We had four Avanti's in the town that I lived in in New Jersey . A white 63, a turquoise 63 and a maroon 64 and turquoise 64. The 63's were R2 cars and the 64's were R1 powered,. There was also an assortment of Corvettes and other hi performance cars owned by others.

I know two other owners (beside Bob Caser) who bought their Avanti's new, one in Ohio and one in Wisconsin. I was going to write that up in my Turning Wheels "Review" column in a future issue.

I know of at least one Avanti that is still with the original owner, an R4 four speed. I know another guy who has a twin supercharged Avanti who inherited it from his uncle who was the first owner.
