  • ZACK, on the firewall

On the firewall of the 1965 Commander I'm working on , Under the paint and primer is printed the name ZACK in capital letters. Is this a employee at Hamilton or some Studebaker code ? Ed

Look in the parts catalog at the telegraph codes Studebaker used. See if it’s there

Probably a “signature “! I’m sure the plant wasn’t exactly hopping, so plenty of down time😁

          Any chance it's "BLACK"?

A local friend has two very nice, unrestored '66's. One has "Turq" on the firewall and the other has "Plum". Both of them are written in grease pencil under the paint.

If the writing is near the wiper motor, that would be the paint color, and as Matt states, most likely means 'black'. Hamilton cars had the color written with a grease marker in that location. Here is a '63 Wagonaire in Champagne Gold showing the firewall writing. Click image for larger version

Well since the car is Black that makes sense , You can only see the writing when the lighting is just right , Thanks , Ed

My car has writing on the firewall that also shows up on my Production Order, which is what I thought we were talking about here😁

My father told me that when he worked in the South Bend factory, they would write a shorthand / abbreviation for the paint code on the unpainted firewall so that as the bodies were moving down the assembly line toward the paint booths, the employees would know which booth to direct the body. Doing it this way was faster than consulting the paper line ticket.

Actually it's Apples, Oranges and Peaches !
                      (1) We were discussing Hamilton Ont. Canada built Cars with the marker written Paint Color UNDER the paint. Definitely to get the correct Color on the right Body.

Apparently per Mark L's post, SB also did that, possibly in a slightly different location Under the Paint, than the later applied Line Number, On the paint.

                      (2) The South Bend built Cars had the "Line Number" written on the Firewall of the Body AFTER Paint, to help get the correct Frame with Engine, Steering Column and options under the correct Body per the Line Ticket.

                      (3) The Vernon (L.A.) Plant built Cars like Daan's, had the "Factory Order Number" on the Firewall over the paint for reason number 2.

My '56 Power Hawk known since New, that my Dad sold new and in 1962 bought back, has Factory Order Number # X7574 built about March. 16, 1956 vs Daan's Order Number X8978 Built about May 28 or 29, 1956.
It has almost the Same options as mine, Red & White, High Power Kit also LA built, with 259 Engine VL9005, yours is VL10,000.

                      I also own LA Engines; VL8048, VL3671 (a '55), and PL5268
