  • Anyone else having difficulties with the Studebaker Truck Talk forum?

Anyone else wondering what happened to the Studebaker Truck Talk forum? Seems it's locked out us long-time users.

I visit several obsolete and current production marque sites and haven't encountered this problem anywhere else.

Sort of same but different, a large percentage of younger users have abandoned internet fora and gone to facebook. One might suggest trying to charge users $3/mo. is guaranteed to chase away the few remaining old CASOs.

I had to abandon the Stude truck forum (my favorite). Went on Vacation and when I came back and I could get on and look at the threads and responses , but couldn't respond to anyone. Now I can't look at anything. What a bummer.

Jack. I was on the truck forum around 7am eastern time. No issues at all. Looked at three threads.

Further investigation indicates if one has ad blocking software, the Truck Talk site will not allow participation. Only if they can make us look at ads or pay $3/mo not to look at ads can we now be members.

The ads I see on STT have an 'X' in the top right corner. I click on the X , the ad disappears, and I go on about my business. Using Google Chrome. Other servers might treat you differently.

I have given it up -- simply can't get on. Used to be my favorite site. Disabled my ad blocker for that site only, but it still won't let me on. Am using Google Chrome -- no good. Tried MS Edge -- still no good.

Would be willing to pay them a modest annual fee for access -- but their only payment option is automatic monthly deductions from a credit card. That is not acceptable to me.

Skip, I'm using Google Chrome also -- both on my laptop and my phone. Do you have the latest version of Chrome? I was having some problems getting on certain sites with my old laptop, because it had Windows 8.1 and the latest versions of Chrome wouldn't work with Windows 8.1 once Microsoft stopped updating it. About 3 months ago the laptop finally died (not the hard drive, but the charging/battery part, it was literally breaking apart anyway from 10 years of hard use) and was replaced with a laptop with Windows 11. Once I had the most up-to-date Chrome, I've had no problems with any of those sites.

I’m using Firefox and am able to log on, the normal pop up ads are still annoying though!

Something is definitely up because I miss seeing the quantity of posts there. Some people have definitely abandoned it. I hate to post here and there, but I would miss some really excellent knowledge if I only posted on the truck forum.

Thanks for the question. Am using Windows 10 and the latest version of both Chrome (first choice) and MS Edge (as a backup). Both produce the same response from STT. I wish I could remember how we chose Tapatalk as the host, and should contact Tony O (our POC with Tapatalk) to determine what the ground rules are. Over the past few years, I have contributed several hundred bucks to the Tapatalk fund, and am a bit pissed that I'm being held up for more.

                        Hello everyone,

Paying the fee has helped me read the site but the challenges noted above really cut down on the number of other people on there to visit with.

The good Studebaker people on here and on STT have kept my truck kind-of-running for many years. I will keep visiting and posting on STT in hopes of better days and wiser management.

                        James.

I haven’t been on there in years, but I just searched it to see what it looked like and had no trouble seeing it. This is on my iPhone.

Skip, I'm having the same problem that you are. I can't open any discussion topics, as soon as I click on anything, I'm hit with a paywall that I can't move past unless I throw money at it. While I'd be happy to make a donation voluntarily, I won't support a host website company that demands a subscription fee.

When the old Network54 platform went away, Tony had no choice but to migrate the site over to Tapatalk. It may be possible to move everything to a different host, but that's above my pay grade and, well, entirely up to Tony.

I've been a semi active participant on that site since 2006. That forum has always been my favorite, just because of how well everyone has managed to get along, and stay on topic. There's no club affiliation, no moderator controlling the conversation, no fighting or bickering.. Just a bunch of guys talking about old trucks. And it's somehow managed to stay that way for more than two decades.

                              Matt-
Agree. I suspect (have no real data) that those of us who are being prevented from posting are those who are either frequent posters and/or have taken up a lot of memory recently with photos. You and I meet those criteria. I say that because I am able to get on the site with no problems as a visitor with my phone (I have never used my phone for that site before, and had not registered as a user with that device). If you can get into contact with Tony O, I suggest you ask him how we might investigate changing hosts.
