  • One step closer to roadworthy: the charging system works with more work to come

    Good morning;

    After weeks of parts collecting and waiting out 90+ weekend days, I finally installed a gm alternator (37 amp) in my 62 Lark hardtop (6) and replaced the front motor mounts. This morning I got the lark started and the charging system works putting out around 15 volts.

    So I drove my Lark up and down beside the driveway, ten feet down, ten feet back.

    Now I have to fix the AS series carb, as best as I can tell, the accelerator pump doesn't work when you hit the gas. I have a carb kit but I have no idea how old it is, when I had the carb worked on about ten years ago, we used an old kit that I found at a swap meet. Can you even get newer kit for a Carter AS or might I have to use an RBS just because I can get a kit at NAPA because Mopar used RBSs well after Studebaker was gone.

    Have to pick up a SW voltmeter, I know the system is charging but I don't want to check the system with a multimeter every time I start it, will eventually get a SW electric temp gauge too.

    Need to replace the automatic transmission mounts, I now have a better idea why the Lark was popping out of Park back in the late 1990s.

    and when I get to it, I need to pick up a couple of axle u bolts and about two feet of one inch square tube to finish my adaptation of a S-10 rear stabilizer bar to a 62 Lark.

    Hope to all this done before the advent of colder weather because my Lark is parked outside behind the house.

    Sounds like you're making steady progress getting your '62 Lark roadworthy again! Installing the alternator and getting the charging system operational is a big win. Best of luck troubleshooting the carb - hopefully the kit isn't too old and you can get it functioning properly again soon. It's always satisfying to cross items off the to-do list. Wishing you clear skies and motivation as you keep tackling tasks on your list.

      Here is something I use. You can get a single plug in to your cigarette lighter. Or this dual type. Click image for larger version
