  • PRIVATE or PUBLIC?

The Studebaker Drivers Club, at one time, authorized Cornerstone Registration, Ltd., to publish and sell to SDC members only, a Membership Roster, which included, by Country, member information (i.e. name, street address, telephone number, email address and Studebakers owned). A digital version of the Roster was later offered on a thumb drive. Both versions carried a disclaimer notice prohibiting sale or reproduction of the material contained therein, in an attempt to keep it private. (The current membership application continues to solicit the same personal information.)

I only have the 2018 digital version, so I inquired about the availability of an updated copy. Cornerstone responded “…SDC Board was worried that people would copy it and spread it around. They feared member information would be compromised, sold, etc. They put a halt to the sale of the directory on a USB drive.” Privacy does prevail!

In the October 2022, issue of Turning Wheels under “The President’s Message” on page 4, a **BREAKING NEWS** item announced that the SDC Board of Directors, in a special meeting on August 28, 2022, approved a new communication package for the members of SDC. Enter Group Works.

Sometime around March 20, 2022, obviously prior to the official announcement, I was alerted, via email, to the growth of Group Works. It had expanded its reach into SDC to the tune of 4,000+ contactable members. I am not sure how that happened, but invitations would be sent to those members offering them inclusion into the Group Works data base if they so desired. Some ultimately accepted the invitation only to find that they were also offered invitations to join other groups of Elment3, the parent of Group Works. Group Works no longer exists. But does privacy prevail?

The issue with GroupWorks is that SDC should have given each member the choice of giving his/her private contact information to a third party company.

I want to address this issue directly:

PRIVACY DOES PREVAIL, to answer PeterHawk's question. SDC Members, when entering their information on their membership application form are offered the option of keeping ALL their information PRIVATE . This would have prevented them from joining GroupWorks. If an SDC member wanted to take advantage of the programs offered by Element3, the SDC member made contact with them. Element3 cannot share any of their information due to HIPPA regulations.

GroupWorks ended June 21st. You don't need to continue a rant about GroupWorks or Element3.

        Denny,

Thank you for your positive response to my post. It is reassuring to know that SDC strives to honor their privacy policy. Hopefully, readers of these postings will understand and appreciate its purpose and understand it is their choice to personally react appropriately relative to their own circumstances.

As to the “Membership Roster”, it was good to read Don Jones’ comments in the minutes of the Dubuque International Meet BOD meeting. As Secretary of the Iroquois Chapter, I find the information contained therein, most useful, especially for recruitment purposes to our Chapter.
Finally, noting your completion of terms as President, I wish you all the best and thank you for enduring all the difficult issues you had to face. Now take time to enjoy your Studebakers and your grandchildren but not necessarily in that order.

        Peter

          Peter,

Thank you for your kind comments about SDC.

I thank you also, for your comments on the completion of my term as President, but you have my presence for another 14 months. My term will end at the International Meet in Washington, Pa September 16-20, 2025.

I will continue to enjoy my grandchildren and Great Granddaughter in the ensuing months.
