Here's the thread about these from last September:

Imbedded in that thread is a link to the STT Forum, where this was discussed.

I see back then the approach was to try to assemble a set of correct type to accomplish this. Our approach is different- casting the actual type from a given tag, exactly as factory-produced. This retains the exact, correct typeface, letter spacing, and any other authentic peculiarities. This could be done for any embossed tag of any type, and the dies can be made for a couple hundred- or less! Only requires the loan of an existing tag to create the die set. Might not be feasible for regular body tags, but some of the more popular streamers might be worthwhile. This is a hobby project for me, so I'm not worried about making a profit- but I do hope to at some point break even; so selecting which tags are desirable enough to sell several of would be key. Might even come to be that somebody with one of those 400-point cars would be willing to pay for their own dies for a special tag.

I haven't heard back from Mike yet about blank tags; anyone else have any they'd sell a few of? I read Gary Ash's mention of finding small sheets of .020 zinc that might be an answer. Hopefully Gary will see this and add his thoughts.

Hey bams keep up the good work, I checked the link above, and the machine does a very nice job, but it's $3500.00. Also you would have to worry about spacing issues, unlike your method.

Bob, here's an EASY one to reproduce! This was on one screw of a '61 Lark 4dr. I haven't looked at this particular tag in ages, but when I spoke about it in the past, I erroneously stated that it had a single letter on it. As you can see, it's totally blank! Blank, save for the pale blue paint that the whole car wore. Anyone wanna hazard a guess what the significance of this thing was???

            Ray, I would've remembered a tag like "KIT". I don't have it.

I have two Larks that had the 4 speed tags. One is a 63 convertible and the other a 64 hardtop. The tags were mounted on the right screw when looking at the firewall from the front of the car. They were mounted BEFORE the cars were painted and were positioned at about a 30 degree upward angle. I know this because, when removed, you could see the outline of the unpainted area.

Maybe you could make one up for Standard and Challenger owners that says "STRIPPER". That would make the judges scratch their heads

So far the most popular tags seem to be "sun.roof", "4-SPEED", and "air cond.", and maybe "speedstr". But even then, how many of each could I likely expect to sell in, say, the forst 6 months- maybe 15 or 20, tops? There's plenty of ways to skin that cat already- but they all would need to get too much money per tag and sell too many to start to break even; so this may be a way to do them cheaply. I wonder what ther likelihood would be of being able to secure the loan of the different original tags from which to make molds? That remains to be seen, I guess.

I haven't heard from Mike Gahlbeck (hotwheels63r2) yet, who told me he had a bunch of the streamer blanks. If he doesn't have any, do any of you have some? Or, alternatively, something close to the original material? I e-mailed Gary Ash as well. I'm anxious to make samples to show those interested at York. Any leads appreciated!
